Blake carefully knocked the door.
“Tom?”
“Not right now.” His voice was low and monotone.
He opened the door anyway. Tom was sitting on his knees, with his elbows on the table, facing away from the door.
“Leave.”
“Are you okay?” Blake was worried.
“I said leave.” This was so unusual for him, he was always open about everything.
Blake took one step inside and closed the door close behind him.
“Please?”
“Go talk to Adam, I’m busy.”
“You don’t look very busy.”
“WelI am, Okay?!” The sudden outlash startled Blake, and he backed up against the door. Tom lowered his head again. “Let me be.”
Blake was still concerned for his friend. He approached Tom slowly.
“Blake I’m fine, really.” His voice cracked. Blake didn’t believe that for a second. He was about to kneel beside him but realized he was short enough anyway. He sighed.
Tom stayed silent but made his hands into fists. His eyes were closed.
“Listen..” Blake tried.
“No.”
“Tommie, please ju-” He slammed both his hands on the table, straightening his back.
“DON’T CALL ME THAT!”
”But…” He had never had a problem with his nickname. Everyone called him Tommie. All the time. He sunk back down.
“I just want to help you.”
“I don’t need help.”
“Then why are you in an empty room by yourself refusing to talk to me?” Blake was starting to get impatient. Tom just turned his head away.
“Answer me.” His impatience was starting to seep through into his voice. Nothing. Blake grabbed Tom’s chin and lifted it up so he could look at him.
“What. Is. Wrong.” He looked right into Tom’s trembling eyes.

Blake needed to calm down.
He let go,expecting Tom to remain still, but he went back to his original position, almost looking like he was praying. Blake had never seen him pray before, but he had heard that he does, with his mother. The only thing that was off was his hands being separated.
By now,he had realized Tom wasn’t going to tell him anything, so he sat down as comfortable as he could next to him, making sure to leave him space.
He didn’t think anything would come out of that, but he didn’t want to leave Tom right now.
“What am I even… Doing here?” Tom seemed hestitant but said it anyway. Blake kept quiet.
“I joined you because… I joined to protect her.”
“Your mom?” Tom nodded. There was a bit of silence between every time they spoke.
Blake didn’t understand how that would help, but this wasn’t the right moment to ask.
“I…” Tom seemed troubled. He clenched his fists harder and closed his eyes tighter. He took a shaky, short breath.
“Are you… Crying?”
“No.” Yes he was. Blake could hear it. He was terrible at hiding it.
“You’re crying.” This was so weird. He had never seen Tom cry before. He wasn’t the type that cried.
“I’m not!” The tears were starting to show. “I wouldn’t, that’s…” He put his hands together showing that he had a bit of blood on his nails. He must’ve driven them into his palm. “Weak.” Blake couldn’t help but taking that personally.
“It’s not.” It sounded a bit more annoyed than he wanted.
“You’ve said it yourself.” The tears ran down his cheeks, he wasn’t trying to hold them back anymore. “Crying is only for weak people who can’t handle anything.”
Had he really said that? He probably did at some point, it sounded like him.
But still… He thought. Hearing someone else quote him on it was totally different.

He scooted closer to Tom.
“You know… “ He scratched the back of his neck. “Maybe I was wrong.”
Tom wiped some of his tears from his cheeks. He didn’t answer but he nodded. Blake considered putting his arm around him but just layed his hand down behind him. They sat like that for a long time.
