I'm looking to flesh out my story, a medieval fantasy about dragon-shapeshifters. Feel free to ask me anything related to their powers (including rarity and their place in society), and I'll do my best to answer. I'll admit when a question has me stumped (as I don't have every single detail worked out), and am open to (helpful) suggestions on what might work better.

@vibe

  • do they shapeshift back into humans with their clothes or without?
  • how rare are they?
  • does society accept them?
  • what kind of dragons? (wyvern, wyrm, dragon, etc.)
  • do they hoard treasures? what kind of treasures?
  • what do they eat? are they omnivores or carnivores or, heck, even herbivores?
  • can they talk in dragon form?

@NobleWolf

  • Yes, they keep their clothes when they shift into humans again. However, the state of their clothes reflects the state their dragon form was in before the transition. For example, if one got into a fight and was clawed hard enough to pierce the scales, their clothes will be torn when they shift out.
  • Pretty rare, and this question actually segues into the next.
  • Society not only accepts them, it practically reveres them. They are daid to be descended from a mysterious being of unknown origin. Over time this "race" split into noble Houses, and these houses are further split into two categories: the Greater and Lesser Houses. Members of the Greater Houses have higher chances at being able to shift (about 20%) while the Lesser Houses have a much smaller chance of 5-10%. Greater House dragons are said to be stronger and more gifted. Many of this kingdom's nobles are part of one House or another, or has connections to it. Even their king is a shifter, and both he and the queen are from Greater Houses. The Houses are pretty influential, but even put together they make up a very small portion of the kingdom's population.
  • Right now, only four legged dragons have appeared. Drakes (the wingless ones) are also possible.
  • Them being nobles, yes, they do have their shares of treasure, so to speak XD Mostly assets and personnel, connections and the like. But the royal palace is said to have a pretty large treasury (gold and jewels and such).
  • These guys are basically just humans with the ability to shift into dragons, so they're omnivores, but it's really up to them.
  • No, they can't talk while in dragon form. Their intelligence remains, though.
