@Gentleman

Hello, friends.

If you haven't seen me around, I'm Gentleman, but you may refer to me as whatever you feel like referring to me as.
I only have one writing friend IRL, and it troubles me that I have no one to critique the things I write aside from this one individual. No one else really reads my drafts (though, part of this is my own shyness to show people these drafts, truthfully, but… never mind that).
I thought it might be an interesting idea if a small group writers were to create a dm thread on this site solely for discussing and critiquing each other's writing. I struggle with being very open about my ideas, but maybe doing this will help me.

I only have a few requests if you wish to join.
Please do not use harsh language above that of a PG-13 level while in group discussions.
If any of your story snippets have anything NSFW in it, please make sure to specify that and place a warning before linking to your work. Please don't put inappropriate scenes directly into the chat where people will have no choice but to see them. Example: if Gerald's head gets sliced off in this scene and lobbed at his sister and you've decided to describe this in great, gory detail, put a gore warning at the beginning. It's not a big deal if your descriptions aren't too gory, but if they are, make sure everyone knows before reading. If Robert and Tina are gonna get jiggy, make sure you warn your readers.
It's preferred that you don't post actual chapters to the dm, but rather links to documents with your chapters. That way people don't have to scroll through your entire chapter if they don't have time to read it all yet. It's more efficient.
When critiquing other people's work, be nice. Don't just say, "I don't like it." Kindly inform them, "I really liked the characters in this scene, but there was something unnatural about the dialogue." Don't lie, though; if you hated the whole thing, don't tell them you liked it. Just be nice about saying you hated it. I do encourage honesty, because it's the only way we'll improve.
Don't start drama. I don't have time for extra anxiety.

I can't think of anything else at the moment, but if I do, I'll let you know. If we want to use Google Docs, we could leave comments on each other's work. The only rule is to NOT use ANY cursing or inappropriate language when commenting on someone's work. Please and thank you.

So to join… just say so! And tell me (us) a bit about your writing. What genre do you like to read and/or write? Have you ever written a complete story before? How many characters do you have? Favorite tropes? You don't have to answer all of these— just as much as you like.

@Starfast group

This sounds like a lot of fun :)
What genre do you like to read and/or write? Fantasy mostly

Have you ever written a complete story before? Yeah, but I'm still editing it.

How many characters do you have? 27 currently uploaded to my Notebook page. Some of them I'm not really using though, and some of them are pretty new and not really fleshed out.

Favourite tropes? Forbidden magic and found family are the two that immediately come to mind.

@Gentleman

Ah, hello there, and welcome! I'm glad you are interested. I don't think we've spoken before, so it's nice to make your acquaintance.
Fantasy is a great genre! (I'm looking at you, Tolkien.)
I might ought to answer these questions as well, now that I think of it.

What genre do you like to read and/or write? Superhero fantasy, dystopian, and sci-fi themes are my go-tos. I can't think of anything I've written that didn't hold at least one of these themes, honestly.

Have you ever written a complete story before? Considering the literal hundreds upon hundreds of started but unfinished Google Docs I have, let's not discuss this.

How many characters do you have? Erm… too many.

Favorite tropes? Any trope done right is amazing, but I especially love slow-paced villain-to-hero tropes and hero-to-villain tropes.

@moss

This is cool, I'd love to join!
What genre do you like to read and/or write? I like anything from realistic ya stuff, comics, sci-fi, mystery, etc.

Have you ever written a complete story before? Not yet but I plan on making a comic in the future.

How many characters do you have? Surprisingly not that much. I haven't counted but I think maybe 15 max not including minor bg characters.

Favourite tropes? Like Gentleman said, anything that's written well. However, I do like the found family one and I really love those murder mysteries where you have to figure out the killer throughout the book.

@saor_illust school

I'd like to join as well, if yall will have me !! ^^

What genre do you like to read and/or write?
Most things fiction! Not too big a fan of historical fiction/realistic fiction (whatever that genre's called, can't quite remember) though.

Have you ever written a complete story before?
Ahahaha yes but let's not talk about that very cringe-worthy story I was forced to write in 5th grade for NaNoWriMo, and I don't think I can even call it "complete," to be honest. Like Gentleman, I can definitely agree with the hundreds upon hundreds started but never finished stories in Google Docs haha.

How many characters do you have?
Ooooh, a tough one. Let's see here, I've got about… eight that I can think of off the top of my head wAIT NO NINE but yeah, I have a whole bunch but I may or may not have only used the majority of them like,,, once aha wAIT are you talking about on nb? If so, I don't actually have very many characters that I put on nb, I leave them all up for my memory aha

Favorite tropes?
As Salami and Gentleman said, if it's written well, I like it aha. Don't have a preference for any in particular.

@Urby

I've been meaning to get back into writing and working on projects!

What genre do you like to read and/or write?
Sci-fi and fantasy! I tend to write more character-focused things but I love looking at things with deep worldbuilding.

Have you ever written a complete story before?
I got close once! …Once.

How many characters do you have?
Depends on what project you want to know about! In total I kinda have a I-can't-hold-all-these-limes situation, with both characters and 'verses, so, uh, I plead the fifth

Favorite tropes?
Characters having a heart-to-heart with their inner selves, whether it's their past, their insecurities, trauma, etc.

@Relsey-TheElder

I would love to do this!

What genre do you like to read and/or write? - For writing Fantasy and Fiction. I've Dabbled in Sci-Fi and I want to do some Historical Fiction. I read the same thing that I write. Well throw in some Period dramas (Pride and Prejudice is a masterpiece) A few Contemporaries, A Romance Novel if I'm feeling especially alone in life. I'll try reading just about every book you can throw at me, but I'm no above putting it down.

Have you ever written a complete story before?- Yes! It was my very First NaNoWriMo and it's absolute Garbage. It's called "Strands of Gold" It was supposed to be the first in a series. The second book is called "Shards of Midnight" but I never finished it. I don't know if "Story boarding" an entire project counts, but my main project I have completely mapped out.

How many characters do you have?- I have a lot of characters, For each of my current projects I like to have at least five characters on hand to pick up any roles I need them for as I start writing Major or minor. Just going through my current Projects off the top of my head.. no that was to much thinking, I got to 50 and just stopped.

Favorite tropes? - If it's written well I like it. Unless it's Time travel, Then It has to be written excellently.

@Gentleman

Welcome, everyone! I'm glad to see so many other writers interested in joining. :)

Ah… yes. I tried my first NaNoWriMo in 11th grade, and… well, my eyes burn every time I try to read it. Mistakes were made. Many mistakes. Everything written before that is so abominable that we won't discuss it here.

@salami011

Have you ever written a complete story before? Not yet but I plan on making a comic in the future.

Wow!! That's incredible. I love comics (many different kinds of comics) and have always wanted to make a webcomic based off of the universes I've crafted, but I'm no where near the needed skill set to actually accomplish that goal just yet.

@Urby

Oh… erm…
is literally holding like way too many limes and has them shoved in every pocket, in my shirt, tucked under my chin, etc.
Yes. Yes. I can relate.

@Relsey

The fact that you finished one makes you a hero. Garbage or not, finishing stories is not an easy task. I should know, considering all of the unfinished manuscripts and ideas that mock me on a daily basis.

@stolenbrocoli group

Ooooh i really like this idea !!
What genre do you like to read and/or write? mostly adventure type of stuff. my current WIP is a post-apocalyptic thing
Have you ever written a complete story before? i wish
How many characters do you have?about 10 i think

@Kefi

What genre do you like to read and/or write? - I LOVE fantasy, Urban or otherwise, but I've branched out a little recently
Have you ever written a complete story before? - I've actually finished several, but I hate the majority of them and they're just floating around somewhere in my Docs (,:
How many characters do you have? - Too many to count. I'm more or less allergic to giving my stories only one protagonist.

On another note, I REALLY love this idea! I've had a small critique/feedback group for writing in the past of two or three friends, and I really felt like it improved all of our writing. If y'all are still wanting this to be a thing I'd love to participate! (:
