Jack Melony, a homeless teen, has lived the past few years of his life in fear and with a big secret. His father is the reason his life is forced to stay quiet and lonely. When eighth grade begins in 1939, he expects it to be a normal school year of silence, but he's completely wrong. His life spirals out of control as life seems to toss him left and right. Either pain, immense joy, surprise information, or a slap in the face seem to be waiting for him at every turn. Just when things seem to be going alright, something else springs up to throw him off track.
In the end, the question that remains is whether he loves himself. The enemy and his friends seem to be telling him two different things. It is who he chooses to listen to in the end that will make all the difference.
