How do you know when you have enough information to start writing? Is there a checklist you use? What is a good number of characters/locations/items to have before beginning?

i think, as a rule, you are never truly done building your world. you might have all the little details, but once you start writing, something pops up or doesn't fit with what you originally planned, and then you're back to the drawing board. i usually just go at it with an inkling of an idea and build as i'm writing, so things change along the way. it's up to you to decide what's important (and thus worth mentioning in your story) and what you know as the author but might not be relevant to the story, but your world can keep growing even after the story is finished. i think as long as you have a character and a location, you can start :)
