@JuniperJoan

but does anyone know or have heard accounts of what it's like to be bombed? Like the blitz, bombs are falling on your city type stuff? I'm trying to write more than "and then something exploded in the sky and the ground shook," you know?

@Oakiin

I haven't heard any first hand accounts, but what I would recommend is watching historically accurate movies about it. The beginning of Narnia, for example, s a great one at conveying the terror and attachment to loved ones fighting in the war, In This Corner of the World, which is a japanese animated film about bombing during WWII. Not sure if it covers the Hiroshima bomb, however, that might not be what you're looking for anyway. There's actually a plethora of WWII Japanese films like this, and some are VERY good, though I can't recall specific titles rn

It depends on what type of bombs are being used.

Honestly I don’t have the direct experience of “bombs being dropped on my city” sort of feeling but I used to live in an area that sort of had a lot of political related problems and thus, car bombs.
It also depends on the distance to the bomb. Now for me I haven’t been directly close to that many bombings but I will tell you, they are loud. when they go off it’s like a feeling as if your whole body is shaking inside and out. You may not be able to hear that well either.

As well as the distance, if you’re standing far off you might see the explosion but there might be a one or two second pause before it hits, unless you’re really close or far away (in the former case you’ll probably get the brunt of it, knocked off your feet; in the latter you’ll probably hear something like a gunshot although much much louder)

Of course since it’s been a while I don’t have very good accounts nor am I the best at explaining stuff, there’s a lot of really good movies and shows that do display that sort of stuff though. Band of Brothers is a really good show for that sort of stuff (it’s also a really good show in general)
I would be cautious with the Japanese ones though they can get pretty dark like others have said

If you want any specifics from me just ask questions and I’ll try to explain, though like I said I’m not the best at it
