One race of mine that I've been playing with is the E'vi. They're an artificially constructed race of amorphous electric blobs that resemble a mix between jellyfish and manta rays that float through the air in packs.
They first appeared in a short story of mine a few years ago set in a post-apocalyptic future, in which they're the only survivors of mankind, endlessly traveling through deserted deserts (ha) and sucking power from long-gone solar panels (from a clean energy utopia long ago). They're mildly sentient, but only really have the drive to go collect electricity/power from oversaturated grids and redistribute that electricity to other underpowered grids (through awesome lightning bolts they shoot from their bodies). In this desolate future, there's not really a lot of point in doing so, but that's all they were designed to do – so they do.
I'm now working them into what I guess would be their origin story, set in the time of that electric utopia. We (humans) are developing them to autonomously redistribute power between grids, but I'm still working out the nooks and crannies of what else they're all about.
YOOO thats so cool @andrew (Our Supreme Lord and Overseer)
A race I kind of worked with I called Dragon-Shifters. (I know, unoriginal name). They have their humanoid/elvish form. That is essentially an elf but with pointed ears, fangs, claws, and much sharper features. When they reach a certain age, their goddess grants them their wings. This comes in the form of a magic tattoo that shows up on their back. Once they have this, they can freely transfrom between their humanoid and pure/full dragon forms. Their tattoo is an exact showing of what their wings look like in their dragon form. So if their wing gets a tear in a battle and they transform back, the tattoo will show a tear as well. Once they have trained and reached adulthood, they can learn how to semi-shift. This means they stay in their humanoid form, for their wings sprout from their back and they are in a mid-shifted state.
These creatures live in tribes and tend to avoid all other beings, especially humans and elves. They have a messy history.
