@Yamatsu

I go the George R.R. Martin route where nearly EVERYTHING is important, even if I don't use it. "Aragorn ruled wisely and well for 500 years." What the hell does that mean? What do you mean "wisely and well?!" Were the taxes low? High? They did just come off of a war. What about the Orcs? Are they still a threat? Were their peace talks? No citizen riots due to poor crops? Mass funerals? Ending off like that feels extremely lazy when there is so much more work to be done!

Important:

  • Basic outline of geography (Climate, tectonic plates, biomes etc.)
  • Map (Not totally necessary, but will definitely help you with the above one. If you're good at map making, do this. If not, don't worry about it)
  • Basic outline of civilisation (Where do they get the food from? Are they in medieval stasis? Where does the sewage go?)
  • Deep understanding of history (For if you're doing an alternate history world, folks. Germany or the CSA won't magically win their wars)

  • Anything else you're interested in (Do you like writing about the judicial system or the precise components of a spaceship? Then do that! Do you like creating new plants and animals? If not, then don't worry!)

@Yamatsu

LOGISTICS! Holy crap, logistics! People seem to ignore the fact that weapons of war, food, vehicles, and other supplies need to actually GET to the army so they can be used! Who makes them? How do they get there? Are there issues in getting them there? All of these details that could add SO MUCH to a story if people knew how they worked.

Just look up a lot of the major WWII battles and find the sections where they talk about how they managed to enact those crazy plans, it'll blow your stupid face off!

If you are wanting to see or make your land, incarnate maps is a great way to draw your map. You can visualize everything better.
