Basically this place is home to a variety of humanoid species, but not humans. So you get humans with wings, anthropomorphic people, werewolves, sirens, mermaids, vampires if you want, too. So far I have this place called the Dust-Bowl, its an ancient volcano that has already erupted so its just a great big crater on top of a mountain, but its filled with sand (dont ask idk how it got there) and the sand is so fine its like dust. But thats all I have so far.
Well, for starters, try categorizing your races. What major groups do you have? Once you do that, you can try to find a place to put them. For example: mermaids and sirens - do they live in an underwater palace, maybe next to an underwater volcano for heating? Do your winged people live on cliffs? Take your races, and find out HOW they live, which can tell you WHERE they live.
If you're thinking more about how these places relate to each other, in terms of travel, or simply their layout in a map, I'd have a rough sketch of each place. What is the climate like? Where is this climate found on Earth, and if it isn't, where would it be and why? Try marking a sheet of paper with a single line across it - this is your equator. Have small stones or markers for each place, and move them around until you feel comfortable with it. Then block in each landmass.
I hope I helped!
Drawing a map is immensely helpful in figuring out geography. An important thing to consider is where the central location of your world/country is. Is there a busy port that draws people to it from all over the world? What about a capital city, where the government is situated? There could also be natural landmarks, like mountains or valleys, that are a different kind of central location. You could have a river that connects people all over the continent, a vast forest that everyone is afraid to go into, or a maybe a cave that people travel to on a pilgrimage.
I really like locations that are more hidden away within forests! Maybe you can make a little village away from the rest of the world thats only populated with one species, making it something to discover. Just a thought.
