So @SapphireElkins and I are working on this world with our friend who made the story. However she CANNOT worldbuild. Her characters fit into stereotypes PERFECTLY, she adds things about the story that didn’t exist until five minutes ago, and when we try to help she gets mad. By the way, we started writing at the beginning of August.
If it were me (trying to help that is, not needing help. I'll talk about that later), I would politely make suggestions. I wouldn't outright say "You need to change that." or "That's bad." Constructive criticism usually is more productive. For example, you could say, "That's an interesting idea, but what if (insert better idea here)?" If she honestly wants her story to be better, she'll probably consider the idea. Also, I would recommend suggesting to her to read it over to make sure it makes sense. Are your characters balanced? Do all the scenes and parts of the plot fit together? Would the goal be clear to the reader? Are your characters overpowered or one dimensional? Those are all good questions to ask her. Hopefully, she would realize that something's a bit off. Or, have someone whose opinion she trusts read it over. They'd probably be able to tell her what's wrong, and she'll listen to them. If it were me who needed help, I know I genuinely want my stories to be the best they can be. If something about my story were boring and/or bad, I would want to know so I can fix it. It's better to get that sort of advice from friends before you put your story 'out there' and get beaten down by countless people you don't even know. I would be upset that my friends didn't tell me what to fix when I asked. I would probably be crushed by all the people putting the story down. Hope this helped ^^ (sorry for the wall of text btw)
I had a friend that was similar and we basically tricked them into changing it. We had a shared google doc so we had everyone read over it and highlight anything that did't make sense one color, something we thought should be deleted another and some thing grammatically wrong. This helped everyone out because we found what others didn't like about what we wrote and we could correct the others. The best part was we didn't know who highlighted what.
@Caustic_Fraust @SugarLover ~Insta-Smile~ Thanks!! I might try to convert the writing to Google Docs.
