I need a name for humans… like, the human race. Basically all my races are called "human" but some are very unique, some human races have wings, others horns, tails, you know, not the average human-y stuff. But the problem is I have no idea what to call the average, plain old humans. No tails or wings. I was thinking they could be called Bases, like the base of all the other races, but that's not really popping out at me as anything amazing. My other idea was Sods, roughly derived for "yesod" or "יְסוֹד" the Hebrew word for foundation. However I'm not too smitten with this name either, so… any ideas??

I don't know… Sods and Bases sound decent to me, but I get it. You don't want to just settle on anything. You've got the right idea looking at other languages. Keep exploring that route. Latin's one of my favorites when coming up with names. You could even call them 'Sapiens' after homo sapiens if it strikes you. Best of luck, we've all been there!

I would find names that represent what you are looking for - plain, canvas, blank, translucent etc and either blend the words together (if you are creating your own language/world) or use a translator. For example, blank in Hungarian is Ures; its short, simple and easy to read. I have several languages that I look up - Welsh, Polish, Scottish Gaelic, Swahili, French, Malagasy - and blend 2-3 words together to create my own. If you want to keep it simple - find what you want to name the humans and use that as the base word for all — fly-human (humans with wings), horn-human (humans with horns) etc. If a character is introduced as 'human', whatever word you decide, the reader will know that they have no special attributes.
