In a way, video games have actually influenced my writing more than books have. I know that probably sounds appalling to some, but many video games have just as much time and energy put into their design / worldbuilding as books do. My personal favorite is the Fire Emblem series, which got me into the medieval aesthetic. I also based some of my own characters off of different unit classes that exist in Fire Emblem, such as the swordmaster, the common soldier, the berserker, and the general.
What about you guys?

The character of SOL and their ability to take over machines came from me thinking about "Why can't Mega Man teleport directly into Wily's boss chamber? Why does he need to go through the entire castle?"

Storytelling foibles in video games makes for powerful inspiration.

I do this all the time, too. It's hard to get immersed in a game with much worldbuilding in it because I repeatedly pull myself out, inspired to go build my own version of how I thought they were going to develop things.

Awesome topic! Getting inspiration from video games doesn't happen often to me, because I don't play as many games as I'd like to, but I welcome it when it does. As an example, I was recommended Final Fantasy X recently and after playing through it I got some ideas that were perfect for plugging holes in my worldbuilding project that had stumped me for months.

One of the neat things about video games is that many of them have a lot more room for miscellaneous lore and worldbuilding than other types of media. I particularly like Bloodborne and other From Software games as they combine many very different concepts into cohesive and strange but understandable wholes.
