either or, I think? I tend to think of 'verses as just a collection of stories from one specific thing and name them after the most prominent trait, but it'd be nice to hear other perspectives on it as well.

That's a good way of thinking about it. You can use the Marvel/DC "universes" as a concrete example: it's a single set of characters, places, events, and more that might span across multiple stories/books/shows/whatever, but it's all related – and not related to anything in another universe. :)
You can also think of it like a notebook for your ideas. You might have one notebook of interconnected ideas, and another notebook to keep a different set of ideas separate. That's basically what universes are for here.
