I'm trying to decide whether or not to involve my protagonists in my villain's backstory. If they're the reason he's so bad, does that make them the villains?

@ThatBackgroundSlytherin

I think that when it comes to villains, you have to remember what makes them a villain. Villains do bad things for bad reasons, but antagonists do things that are against the protagonists values. As for your question, I've seen a lot of villain backstories that involve the protagonist so I'd say go for it if you're goin for classic!

Again, everyone else is so much smarter than me lol

@avimancer

and having your protagonist "hero" cause the creation of your antagonist "villain" makes the conflict between the two a lot more intimate, and it shows that your protagonist isn't this perfect person.(like in Frankenstein)

I think that having the antogonist having history with the protagonist always makes a story even more intriguing. Take the story that I'm working on for instance; my villian is the hero's sibling.
