So, I have a magic system in my story and I'm not sure if it's too systematic for being Catholic. Also, I've been getting a little bit of crap cause there are no LGBT characters in my story, which I don't really see why that's anyone's business but mine. How do you deal?
I’m catholic :)
What’s your magic system?
I'm catholic too. ^^And I have the same question as @Rvan
@"Suga Lover ~Insta-Smile~"
You're Catholic too?!
yes, but more like a catholic christian if that makes sense lol. My official religion is catholic but I went to a christian school for a while now I'm back at catholic
I'm not sure how it being 'systematic' is a problem with it also being Catholic. Could you give us a bit more information about the parts you're worried won't work?
Hi, I'm Catholic too. I don't really understand what you mean, so like @Riorlyne said, can you give us more details?
yes, but more like a catholic christian if that makes sense lol. My official religion is catholic but I went to a christian school for a while now I'm back at catholic
We seem to have alot in common 😂😂

Well I'm Catholic, and Catholics are Christian, so?? Yeah/maybe/idk??
wait I know I'm not Catholic… but correct me if I'm wrong, but Catholics are Christian, right? All of them? Isn't it one of the three branches of Christianity lol
(the others being protestant (and all the other churches that formed during the reformations and their modern descendants) and then mormon bc mormonism isn't a protestant religion)
Yeah, that why I was kinda confused by @"Suga Lover ~Insta-Smile~" -> "Catholic-Christian".
They’re the same as in they believe in one God Jesus and that stuff. The main difference I’ve noticed it the worship style, church and how Catholic Church gives communion every service, if that makes sense. Christian and Catholic both have church, Catholic has a more specific term, Mass. Christian is more modern that catholic. And Catholic is a branch of Christian. Another main difference is Christians believe that you will go to heaven if you truly give your heart to Jesus (redemption is a lot stronger than Catholic) while Catholics believe that you will go to heaven if you lived a good life while following Jesus. Christians believe that God speaks through the Bible, Catholics also believe this but they also believe that God speaks through the Pope. So when most people (whom are not Catholic) think about Catholic they will most likely think of a Mass or the Pope, while if you think of just Christianity it’s more of a relaxed version without those.
All Catholics are Christians but not all Christians are Catholics. A Christian refers to a follower of Jesus Christ who may be a Catholic, Protestant, Gnostic, Mormon, Evangelical, Anglican or Orthodox, or follower of another branch of the religion.
So I'm assuming this forum was created to ask questions formed generally toward Mass, Pope, Communion and that general stuff.
So when I say I'm a Catholic-Christian I'm saying I consider myself to be both. If someone were to ask if I'm Christian I would say yes, same for Catholic.
(Sorry if this don’t make sense I’m pulling random info from sites, I researched this awhile ago)
Nah fam
Christians aren't a branch of Catholic
Catholics are a branch of Christians
Christian denotes any religion that believes in/follows Jesus Christ
(update I wrote this after reading like the 4th line but actually you corrected yourself later, idk if you wanna edit your comment? probably doesn't matter lol)
And like… I'm Christian (Mormon, specifically) and I respect what you wrote about how Catholicism works (obviously I'm not the source to go to on that, but I've known a lot of various Christians and I feel like the generalizations of other denominations of Christianity aren't accurate? I don't want to ask you to change your comment, that's a lot of work. So like… Yes good info on Catholics but maybe not on generalizing all branches of Christianity?
(I'm sorry I'm v big on accurate information lol sorry)

I realized I did that after I posted it, for some reason I always read what I wrote after I posted it

I wrote the Christian part based off of my Christian school which all the students there were mixed between branches, so I know its generalized. Though I do believe it is mostly the Evangelical branch of what I wrote about.
So, my religious system is tied into my magic system and it mirrors Christianity in a lot of ways, but allows some characters to be "gifted" with magically abilities. I'm just not sure if it's too pagen a concept??? My God diety is called Inri (I know it isn't creative) and he is is based off of the classical idea of God. I don't have it all figured out yet, I'm just getting thoughts on if it's ok for me to write something like that.
If you think of the New Testament, Paul speaks of spiritual gifts (tongues, discernment, healing, miracles, etc.) so I definitely don’t think it's pagan to have certain characters gifted with special abilities. If you find the word 'magic' problematic, you could always call them gifts, Talents (like the parable of the talents) or abilities to distance your ideas from that.
Tolkien was a Catholic (I believe) and he has written a world where characters use magic for good (Gandalf, the elves), and his work is very popular among many Christians I know - they would not consider it pagan at all.
How much of a role does Inri play in the story?
I'm Catholic, and a 'cradle Catholic' specifically. I think as long as the magic is presented as fictional and obviously not real, you should be fine. As for LGBT characters, I'm an ace (not sure on the romance part but it ain't straight) and while representation is a good thing, it's totally fine not to have it in your story. Quite a few people (not on here, but other websites cough Tumblr cough) seem to think if a work has only straight characters it's trash, but that's not true. Representation doesn't determine quality. The plot, characters, and writing itself do.
^^^^ I agree with that too

THANK YOU. Like geez, it's not some kind of trend! (Catholic also btw). I have the same kind of problem too, tbh. I have deities in my story, but sometimes writing them makes me feel like a heathen or something

He influences prophecy, religion, the whole church/state thing is a major theme. Just like God in 12th century England.

Thank you so much for your input, I really appreciate it! I want the religious aspect to be clear and carry part of the story, but I don't want it to be cheesy or gag worthy.
