I don't come on the forums much nowadays, but I'm desperate.
I finished plotting my first novel, and I thought it'd be good enough to start writing. We have a complete cast of characters, a healthy climax, character development… etc etc… But I don't know how to make a decent start. I don't know how to do this despite having years of experience. I have no idea how to make this novel without screwing it up… Please, any other experienced writers who've dealt with starting books, please help me.
Maybe try a few different starts, even if they aren't really good you can always go back and revise it. Once you've started, you can just plow through that first chapter and then keep writing. Once you're back into it, and you have a few pages, you can start to go back and think about what kinds of things will draw the reader in and hint back to what's coming next.
That sounds like a decent plan… but currently, I have no motivation or inspiration to write, with no starts in mind. People always say that you never wait for inspiration to write but I'm honestly stuck. Do you have any advice for how to get inspired? If not that's okay.
I personally like listening to fantasy music, the stuff without words. Songs that kind of tell your story can work too, something you can listen to without being distracted from the words you want to write. Sometimes drawing your characters or setting can also give you ideas on how to write or describe it, too.
My problem is more about finding the least boring/cliche start. I'm working on an urban fantasy series and this is the book that starts it all…. Just finding the correct… everything is incredibly hard.
Stop trying to avoid certain starts, even if it's cliche your characters can make it work.
That's actually great advice.
Thank you all for your help, I was able to make a start. Not the best, but one that's good enough for now. :3 Have a good day everyone.
Yay! Good job!
