A place to gather round and share obscure music!
A place to gather round and share obscure music!
Sly, this is going to be your worst nightmare.
lol I don't mind it at all! I just like seeing people talk about things they love
ah, ok.
Starset:
A group of throat-strained men constantly screaming into microphones about technology, space, death, and breakup. They wear astronaut helmets 24/7 and the lead singer Dustin is a shy cinnamon bun. Uses some electronic undertones sometimes that really triggers
people for some reason. They have only managed to get two albums out in their five-year existence. They come from Columbus, Ohio and are constantly competing with their state Brothers, Twenty One Pilots. They are currently losing the fight and have reached the point of no return. The sub count is 519K, compared to Owl City's, another "small" band, 1.8M.
The few Starset fans have gathered together in sewers, hiding from the oppression. They have gathered together and created the Starset Society and worship Starset's book, The Prox Transmissions.(Their code name for it is First light, since its a culty bible thingy) Their mission is to exploit the gathering technology that is numbing the world. They plan to take over an orbiting satellite and create a frequency unable to ricochet.
They are working on bringing it down close enough to gain control. The future is now for this brave rebellion as they strive to take over the order. They wish to be the last to fall or else they're down with the fallen. The starlight has surrounded them on their new mission, unlike the faint everglow that used to shine.
People keep telling them to "Let it die" but they ignore the carnivore inside the haters. Giving in will only be their unbecoming. They let their halo shine to any new rock fans. Currently, their mission is a huge rise and fall as they look at their target through their telescope.
The telepathic transmission has been sent. Before it falls back to the earth, will you listen to your demons, or "My demons" or will you strive to stand with the Society? Let the gravity of you decide.
It has begun.
(okay, none of this, from the second paragraph on, is true. I just wanted to slip all the songs in there. Can you find them all?)
The Barenaked Ladies (Yes, they're a real band) are a really good, Canadian, 90's alt-rock band. Their lyrics are some of the best I've ever heard, but nobody but me has heard of them. I went to a concert by the former lead singer and it was one of the best things I have ever witnessed, but everybody else there was at least fifteen years older than me…
I've heard of them!
Well, they used to be pretty popular. It's just that most people my age, especially those at my school, are too deep into their mumble rap caterwauling about sexist comments and drugs that they refuse literally anything else. I'm not used to actual people knowing them. I could list my favorite songs but it would definitely take a while…
I'm Blue.
I always thought that song was weird.
Charming Disaster. They are great and I love them. They only have 2 albums out know, but oh well. They do songs that are like on old folk tales and dark things. I would describe them like a ouija board surrounded by roses.
Here we go:
Mac DeMarco
Wolf Alice
Dorothy
Zella Day
NoMBe
Thiago Pethit
@"n o s t r a d a m u s" Dorothy is one of my favourites! Her voice is so pretty.
A few of the more obscure from my playlists:
Chronic Future (my friend introduced me to them, rap/rock i think?), GARNiDELiA (super cute j-pop), Aurelio Voltaire (gothic rock, been listening to him since what, early 2000s?), Sopor Aeturnus (gothic, i think, but i hesitate to call them rock), Nekromatix (psychobilly! its incredible and i only found out about them this year), and of Montreal (alt….something? It's all really trippy music)
Room & Board. I would be shocked if anyone has heard of them. They're a small band in the Columbus, Ohio area, and two of the three band members are teachers at my school (!!!). Their genre is kinda hard to pin down. They used to say they did dark indie-pop, but now they say it's "adhesive and groovy" proto-punk. Either way, I think it's pretty cool music.
I'm really into Celtic music, so here are a few really great bands in that general Genre.
The Great Big Sea, a Celtic-ish group from Canada(Newfoundland). They've had a hit in canada, but in America, their following isn't huge. They do great covers of classics, and they have some pop music that's pretty rock-like in tone. They do a crazy cover of End of the World; the singing is so fast!
A great Celtic metal band is Celtica. I've been to two of their concerts, one at a Hard Rock Cafe and another at a small Renaissance festival. Their most recent album, Steamphonia, is literally an album of Celtic Steampunk Metal. And, in concert, when the venue is comfortable with it, they take out these poles topped with charcoal briquettes and literally set their drumsticks and bagpipes on fire. Not only is their music wonderful, but they're also very friendly and love their audience.
My personal favorite group right now is Anuna, a choral group that sings pieces by the Irish composer Michael Mcglynn(who honestly deserves just as much credit here). The group itself is changing constantly, with new members from all walks of singing life joining and leaving, from rock band leads to opera singers. The music is tight, well-composed, and well-varied for all sorts of moods. And Michael Mcglynn is a pure man who deserves all of the love he can get. He composes his songs by just living his life and letting inspiration come when it does, and you can see that in his music. His songs are an absolute joy to listen to, and to sing to(if you are a choir nerd like me).
