This is actually really difficult for me. It's hard for me to find the balance between a boring protagonist and a total stereotype with no character development. I've tried to read articles, but some struck me as unhelpful and even a little sexist.
Can anyone help?

Your male character should be the same as any female character you might write. He's still a human person, not a different species. If you're writing from the perspective of a teenage guy, he's still going to have silly crushes and he will still have heartbreak. He's still going to love people, he's going to have flaws, prejudices, hobbies, perfections, and imperfections. He will be rejected, and he will be loved. He will go through struggle. The only difference between him and the female version of him, is how he deals with these situations, and the fact that he might try to conceal most of his emotions from people (Because guys typically do, for two reasons. One, it's in their biology, it has something to do with testosterone. And two, that's what society would expect him to do. They want him to be a "man" and follow gender roles and expectations.). He will flirt with girls (or guys) differently than a girl would flirt with a guy (or girl).
