So what is the story about?
I think his motivations would have to be something involving the story. But basic motivations are things like friends, family, Happiness, etc. So maybe something like that could motivate him.

The story is about a lonely 16-year-old boy named Dmitri and how he desperately wants a best friend. He eventually finds a journal of a psychopath that he finds himself identifying with.
Edwards is his music teacher that I really want Dmitri to be friends with, and Edwards likes taking in sad broken things in hopes he can fix them.

Okay, force him into a bad/difficult situation. See what he does. I know that sounds crazy and weird but when you force him into something like that, you're also forcing yourself to figure him out. And when you're figuring him out, put in your mindset that he is a separate person, try your hardest to see things from his perspective.

You already know some basic info about him, if you know actual people like him, what would they do? You don't have to copy exactly what they would do but that might help you get a good idea. Also, if you know about the Myers-Briggs, that helps with figuring out what different types of people do in situations, how they think, how they make decisions, etc. etc. It's basically a personality indicator. Look it up, it's pretty awesome.

Hope that helped!

@rebecca kinda beat me to it lol. I was going to say something like. But I agree, force them into a situation that makes him scare, or nervous, or confused. And once you do that, think of what they would do in that situation!
