I LOOOVE Devilman, and I'm getting back into it like crazy, I cannot contain the references. So, whether it's the manga, 1972 anime, OVA's, or the new Devilman Crybaby, come on in. Although, I'm sure it's super obscure tbh.

Watched the first episode of devilman crybaby. Super grossed out. It was kinda a chaotic mess. I might finish it eventually but probably not lol
I don't so much like the newer adaptation, the artwork is crap, honestly, but it's still just as good as the rest of the series. Of course they tried to give it a modern sense. I get the sense, that from the reviews people love it, and the spike in popularity for the franchise gives me that idea too. But it is a mess.
I've seen all of Devilman Crybaby, and I thought it was really good.
Yeah, it's really an adaptation of the anime from the 70's which itself was an adaptation of Go Nagai's manga Devilman, and even that was meant to be a toned down version of his other manga Demon Lord Dante.
Yeah, I didn't really find out about the fandom until more recently, so I'm only really familiar with Crybaby, though I did know there's a manga and a 70s adaptation (mainly because of memes, unfortunately.)
"Oh, this, it's laced with drugs."
XDXDXD
That about sums it up. Devilman was sure a wild ride.
Yeah. No kidding.
Akira didn't deserve any of this.
Definitely not. And it doesn't even end there. But God did all of that just to punish Satan.
Yeah. Akira was supposed to be basically like Christ, right? That's what I heard somewhere, anyway. Devilman is really deep. Like on the surface, it's lots of action, and a lot of fun, but once you get into it, there's so much symbolism, and it's just really deep. I have a lot of respect for people who can write like that.
He's not Christ, I don't think, but he is the essence of using evil to fight evil. Like a lot of antiheroes.
I see how it could be used both ways. Because yes, he was a Devilman, but I think his base character was very pure, and that works, too. Although, you do have a point there. Because you would think that if he was meant to represent Christ, he probably wouldn't have failed to save mankind.
I also think it was really cool how Akira and Ryo's color palates were so contrasting. Like Ryo was angelic gold and blue, and he was (almost?) always wearing that white lab coat. Then, you have Akira, whose colors are more shadowy and dark. Which I guess makes sense, because Ryo literally is a (fallen) angel, and Akira is a Devilman. However, their personalities switch things up a bit. Honestly, I did love the character designs and colors throughout the anime.
Yeah. In the OVA's and the 70's anime, their color palate is a smidge more similar. And in those too, Ryo was less cold and Akira was more Akira and less Amon. I might add that in Devilman vs Cyborg 009, the crossover, Devilman's design looks absolutely sick. And even though I'm not a fan of 009 I have to admit, it was a good crossover.
Now that you say that, I absolutely do wish we could've seen a little more Akira and a little less Amon in Crybaby.
I also just went to check out the Devilman vs Cyborg 009, and I agree that he's got a great design. (I've never heard of Cyborg 009 though. What is it exactly?)
It's another anime about people of different ethnicities who get cryogenically frozen and then receive cybernetic implants, one is like, a Russian baby that has psychic powers, one is a short, fat Chinese guy that can breath fire, one is a bald alcoholic Englishman that can shapeshift, the main character has superhuman strength and durability, and most importantly great superhuman speed. And I dunno. It's kinda childish though. Not my thing but it looks interesting.
