Kill a character, that is in general beloved
But kill the character in a way that hurts.
Honestly, the ones that make me cry aren’t the ones that go into detail about the character him/herself. The ones that get me are when you detail the reaction of their loved ones.
When a character death occurs, for example, a good rule of thumb is wording. Wording something in a specific way is a good way to trigger a reader's emotions and have them invested. Another thing is how others react to the situation. aka: perhaps a character tugging at the corpse of their long gone friend as tears roll down their cheeks or you can make it even more tragic by having the dead character's love interest confess to their corpse
