What is the general thoughts on it. I know that there are battle scenes and such like in LOTR but what about violence against a single person. Is it too much, not needed? Starting to write my story and I have a 'violent' scene in it but most people that I know that read fantasy are the non-violent type.
Any thoughts?
I think that in most fantasy stories, the violence is unnecessary or doesn’t fit in with the plot or world. However, if the story has basis in violence, or talks about impending or possible violence, the author needs to follow up on their promise of battle or something similar, otherwise the threats are empty and it diminishes the storyline itself.
does the violence move the plot along? If so, then keep it. It will be interesting to see how your characters react. If it's just there for its own sake you should probably remove it though.
My thoughts on violence are the same as my ones on sex. I think a lot of people take it way to far. In GOT the show I had to walk away from it a few times because of Ramses. In fact I actually walked away from it altogether. I like some violence but when it becomes so graphic that I'm cringing and I feel like its for the sake of gore or fetish, I'm out. I used to watch a lot of horror growing up but most because the gore was cartoony and fake nowadays its almost like looking at the real thing. I'm squeamish if you can't tell lol. Anyway yeah, my dad tried forcing me to be a nurse and I couldn't even handle being a dental assistant… I about barfed, it took me all I had to not faint, or throw up on my first day volunteering at a clinic. The first operation I helped with was also a crash coarse for what was the worst a person could undergo. Full teeth pulling and denture prep. Old people bleed a lot because of meds. Sad part on this was I was so hungry the entire time and skipped breakfast to be there early. It made it hard not to throw up because of the acid in my stomach.
Weird thing here, I go fishing and hunting. I can do animal gore…
