try not to think too much about what other people have done, and just do what you want to do. i think fantasy is the best genre, because there are so many possibilities, and no one can tell you that you're doing it wrong! want mermaids that live in the sky? sure! pirates that plunder the seven seas in the seven realms using portals made by maelstroms? heck yes! tiny dragons that steal coins from your couch? it's possible!

also you don't need big words to write fantasy! not all fantasy books are based on or need to be based on medieval europe, so not everyone is going to talk so fancy. ignore everything you know about fantasy from writers like g.r.r.martin and j.r.r.tolkien and do whatever you want!

Do what you like
If you like the idea of it, write it
Plus, this helps sometimes… think of a few tasks that you do daily and imagine what would be different with magic involved. That will help you build your unique idea of a fantasy world

maybe pick a fairy tale you like and try to mutate it into something else? see where it takes you.

Don't focus too much on reasons why things happen if your world has magic and monsters. Magic is a very valid excuse for a lot of things that happen, and you can't be told otherwise. Look at it like this, if something explodes…blame a wizard or a sorcerer who practices evocation (battle magics). Just have fun with its, have some moments where your characters just sit around and boast about their skills and powers.

@Yamatsu

When it comes to working with magic, you either go full ride-or-die with the specifics or "eh, it happens because magic," and both are entirely okay. Do a mix, even! Just go nuts and don't burn yourself out.

I find something that helps me create fantasy worlds is to choose a time and place in history that inspires me (Mayan Mexico, the roman occupation of Ireland, and the Japanese invasion of Korea are some of my favorites) and then create a system of magic, fantastical races or beings, and then some other sort of fantasy factor to turn it into something new.

That's what I do, and it can be a lot of fun! For example, I just finished a story about how the princess wasn't kidnapped by the dragon, but was instead best friends with it. Or you could flip a fairy tale and write it backwards.

There are lots of creatures you can focus on, such as fairies, dragons, gnomes, giants, elves, and a bunch of other ones. You may have to do some studying to see how they live, but it's worth it in the end!

You will also have to decide on a storyline that fits in with your chosen characters. Maybe a gnome trying to fix an iPhone may not work as a good storyline if it's 100% fantasy. If it's fantasy in a modern setting, then it could work. It all depends on what you want to write!
