Silence filled the waiting room as Rantaro entered with a grim expression. After a gruesome accident, a young man was brought into the hospital for emergency treatment. As his car went up in flames, he sustained major burns to most of his body, and the trauma from the force of the collision caused many breaks and fractures. One of his lungs had been punctured, and his odds of survival were slim. Despite the staff's best efforts, he died during surgery. That was the news that the doctor came to deliver.
"He…didn't make it, did he?" the victim's mother asked.
Rantaro shook his head. Despite his calm disposition, he felt horrible about the lost life. He tried his best to save the patient, but there was nothing that could have been done. He had died, despite the staff's best efforts.
"I'm sorry, ma'am, but he has passed," he responded. "There was nothing that we could do to save him. Even if he had survived the surgery, there was a chance that he would never regain consciousness. He is in a better place now. I would stay to console you, but I have other patients to see."
Without another word, the green-haired doctor left the room. His statement about having other patients to get to was a lie, as his shift was supposed to end around the time the crash victim arrived. He was told to stay to help him, but now he could leave. However, at the time, he was looking for his boyfriend. He was rather upset, as he always was when a patient died in his care, but this was the first time where all he wanted to do was cry.
Thankfully, his boyfriend wasn't asked to respond to any other emergencies, so Rantaro found him pretty quickly. His expression remained fairly calm, but there were tears forming in his eyes. It was clear that something had gone wrong.
"They're dead…" he stated after a moment. "I couldn't save them…"
