Hi all. And here's to hoping somebody actually finds this.
I am currently creating a world called Illvicta, and I'm working on a race of creatures called the Kor Oldu, or glass blinded. A race of creatures that cannot see through and are exceptionally weak against glass. I've been searching for valid reasons why and can't quite come up with anything and would appreciate ideas from outside choices
to be entirely honest, you might not actually need a reason
this is a made up world, one you created from the bones up, even if it shares similarities to existing worlds. so why completely follow rules of another world? why not just say that they are just because.
if you're that set on a reason, do you mean scientific or just…a reason? because they could have been cursed by some god or divine being, if that fits into your history and lore. a witch, or anything that could have that power. or, maybe the chemical makeup in glass is what's actually their weakness. maybe sand or whatever glass is made of in your world isn't compatible, and the entire race is just straight up allergic to it
Alternately, maybe their eyes glow, and the glow bounces off the glass and makes it opaque? Just a thought, idk. It is a very tricky question.
There's two reasons I can think of why humans can't see through glass.
One is if the glass is frosted - it's not see-through and gets less so the more opaque it becomes.
Another reason is it's stain glass - which is basically just coloured opaque glass.
Maybe you could use those? Idk
I had a bit of an idea about how these creatures used their eyes to communicate, pretty much looking into eachothers souls as a form of communication, and that glass was the one material able to imprison a soul. which made them react violently to it as well as not be able to see though it, because its literally a void within itself.
Then have you not answered your own question?
That seems like a much more interesting and poetic idea than anything I could have thought up XD
Well yes I’ve answered my own question but I wanted to see if anybody else had any better ideas
Oh, no. That's honestly a really cool idea, one I couldn't have come up with.
As it turns out, infra-red vision cannot look through glass. Thermal vision is different, but if any of you have played Warzone with a black-and-white scope, you'll know that you can't see through glass.

I wasn't aware of this fact but it is very true. Quite interesting.
Questions:…Are the Kor Oldu vicious creatures? or gentle? misunderstood? Do they attack anyone or anything or just hunt for food? are they human-like or more animal? Your idea is amazing by the way!
@StinkyMushroom16 welp I saw this late. I have a small entry on then
Creatures of note
Nor Oldu - around six feet in long and about three and a half feet fall, the Kor Oldu are a semi bestial quadrupedal race of reptilian creatures physically unable to see through glass, they are able to excrete a deadly toxin into the air that will melt the skin off of most beings and jump extreme distances, they have been given the unofficial name the Jumping Dragon.
These creatures react violently to glass, they cannot see through it or touch it without apparent injury, as is such glass weapons have been utilized when hunting these creatures.
A few things I didn’t mention. The Kor Oldu are explosively violent towards any bipedal race.
They tend to live in packs
The bastards are TOUGH
