Okay, so basically I have dragons in my world that are a product of either the gods or a single god, but I'm not sure which way to go. My options are:

  1. Have each god so that they created a different species of dragon
  2. Have a god of dragons
    I'm not sure how important it will be to the plot, but it's definitely going to be at least mentioned at some point

@dredgemage

Honestly, if it is not important to the plot, I would just leave it vague enough to give you future freedom to go either way.
Don't fall into the trap of feeling like you have to "finish" worldbuilding, it's something that can't be done because there is always more that can be detailed.

That’s good advice actually… it was just one of those things that was going to end up at least being mentioned in passing, though, as I kind of wanted to sometimes address them as “creatures of the gods,” or “creatures of [insert god name here]”
But I’ll sit on it for a bit before coming to a final decision, and see if anything does become plot-important first.

DID SOMEONE SAY DARGONS?!

I would probably take into account the pantheon you plan on having. What god (or gods) do the people worship? If you have different races, what gods do they worship? Is this like Dungeons & Dragons where all of the gods exist and they go bowling on Thursdays? If not, what gods are not actually real? That may throw a wrench in how the dragons address themselves. They may be the product of one god or another, but would the people even know who that god is? If anything, the people might just think that they were spat out of a crack in the ground and started eating people!

I know there were a few leaps on my end, but this could be something to think about. I hope this helps!

Okay, so you brought up a bunch of important things to take into account, and I think I maybe figured it out. So, I think the best route to go may be to have twin gods that created dragons (possibly in the image of other gods, still deciding there). The god of the arts, innovation, and fear of the unknown, and the goddess of magic and power… So he breathed life into them after crafting them from stone/clay/whatever else I might decide, and she granted them their abilities.
To answer your questions:

  • People worship whichever god they choose. It's sort of Dnd-esque, in that respect. The gods are real, and most people are pretty familiar with most, if not all of them, but perceptions (of their morals and otherwise) vary from person to person. They don't directly interfere (like striking people down), but people who worship can usually talk to the god in question and ask for some sort of boost in ability (like a healer might ask the healing goddess to help them do their job better, and their remedies magically increase in effectiveness, that sort of thing). People only devote their life to one god, if any, but it is usually best to have at least a little respect for all the gods in general.
  • I do not have different races. Just humans and dragons, and I might throw in some other made-up/fantasy wildlife if I deem it important to do so.
  • Normal people (non-dragon-riders) tend to fear dragons or hate them, or see them as a resource to exploit. I'm thinking the 2 dragon gods might be better for the whole "you should probably respect the gods" reason.
    I may have forgotten to address something, but this is what I've got so far, I think.
