If you want a more traditional sense of what demons are like, try finding descriptions for them from a tabletop RPG such as Dungeons&Dragons or Pathfinder. Demons come in all shapes and sizes, but most usually just want chaos and destruction. You're very hard-pressed to find a demon who is completely "nice." Had to geek out a bit, sorry…

Warning: Wall of text-y

So, let me explain my demons.
Youkai are demonic creatures that can shapeshift into humans. 5,000 years ago, the Thunder and Wind Dragons warred against each other. The cat demons sided with the Wind Dragons, the fox demons with the Thunder Dragons. The Wind Dragons and the cat demons won. Due to almost destroying Jugdral, the demons and dragons had to bless everything back to normal. The humans were still traumatized by the war, however. Due to this, the demons and dragons took human forms, Youkai and Manaketes (Yes, this is an FE fanfic) to coexist with humans. 1,000 years later, however, humans discovered the truth behind the Youkai and Manaketes, and most killed and exiled them, but Hufflepuff Silesse welcomed them. The ones at fault for revealing the race's true colors were the Kitsune, fox demons, and so the Manaketes and Nekomata exiled them to the far away land of Hoshido.

Nekomata generally look like huge house cats, but they have long teeth like a saber-tooth tiger and little horns on their heads. They have two tails, and their claws are very long and sharp. Their wings are made out of feathery can attain features from their cat form in their human form, this also applies to half-bloods.

Pureblooded Nekomata can transform without a Beaststone, while halfblooded Nekomata have to use a Beaststone to transform. Some Nekomata, if one parent is a human and the other a halfblood, can't transform without a certain spell. If 2 halfblooded Nekomata mate, they can give birth to any of the blood types. Nekomata have to give birth in human form to make sure the babies don't stay in demon form forever. Although purebloods can transform without a Beaststone, they use them in battle due to Beaststones giving them more power.

Nekomata greatly value their ancestors and can communicate with them through magic. Even Nekomata that can't transform can communicate with the dead, unlike humans and Manaketes. Nekomata have a variety of magic powers, though most mages already know these powers.

Nekomata are very intelligent, though some, like Seliph, have no control over their demonic blood, thus their Beaststone often malfunctions and they go feral. This is why Nekomata hate fighting. Nekomata have no leader, they treat others, even those with human blood, as equals. However, they aren't friendly with humans or Thunder Dragons.

It's a good way to distinguish certain types of demons, because they're not all the same. Demon is a classification, but there are also subcategories of demon to be recognized

I have a few demon cathegories of my own, the first being the ones that are actually called demons by everyone else. They're entities created from the death of another creature just so they can posses an item and offer it magical properties. The demon itself isnt bad or good, it depends entirely on who its master is. One of the demons has a child as its master, and because of that, the demon is everything BUT evil.

The second type are all in the spectrum of ghosts/yokai and all. They're usually called ghosts or spirits, since a large majority are either dead people or animals. It's these guys that are usually on the evil spectrum, mostly bcz a lot of the ghosts are the "i refuse to pass on because im a resentful spirit" type
