Well a lot of people do this because they relate to the character on a emotional or physical level and because of this it makes them feel like the character is part of them. That is one sometimes you love one character and hate the other for no reason! Also, it is why you might get more emotional over one characters death than another

Thank you for asking. This is a major issue I see even in a lot of well-written books; the character is great, except I can't connect. Books depend on a connection between the reader and the character. So, I did a little bit of research - you can read these if you want:

I hope this helps!

I think that people connect and form bonds with characters because they find them relatable. They see their personalities and see that the character has similarities. I also find that I bond with characters over struggles, which sounds weird, but if a character goes through a hard time and come out on top, I connect with them in that I want to come out on top in my struggles. There are also incredibly likable characters who you may not have anything in common with at all, but they're just likable because of their personalities. Like for me, Chuck from The Maze Runner series and I have hardly anything in common, but I love him to death.

People often dedicate themselves to a character when that character goes through struggles that any person would.
Take Dumbo. Everyone loves Dumbo. Unpopular nerds who are bullied daily love Dumbo. Their bullies love Dumbo. Pretty, well-known Instagram girls love Dumbo.
Because Dumbo goes through struggles. He's made fun of, denied, and not believed in. Everyone can associate themselves to at least one of these.

This can go for antagonists as well. Take Loki in the MCU. Everyone wants to be the favorite child. The favorite student. People often know what it's like to work so hard just to have the Other Guy get the prize.

Make your characters similar to your intended audience, and they will love them.

Or you can just make them crazy fun, and the audience will love them anyway. Just write your characters well, and some part of the fanbase will love them.

@stargirl-3213 -Exactly my point. Loki is a beloved character because his struggles are such a human thing. He wants to be the favorite child (and lord of the Earth). He wants revenge on those who lied to him. And he's a mamma's boy, which is nice.
