I have a character who is the first in a long line of monster hunters. I'm having difficulty thinking of a good setting. I have 3 so far.
Medieval England
1690 England
The French Revolution
The Characters name is Roland Ash. The last name comes from his mother being burned for being accused of witchcraft
Since his mother was a whore he is then raised by her coworkers. I know I want a gothic style setting but it's hard to stick to one. I just don't know what setting really lends itself to this character. I also want this family to start before the Grimms and Van Helsings.

Well this might not help but if you want a monster hunter maybe look at with setting has the best myth or legend that comes with it. Witch hunts in France also ended in 1682 so if you want to set it in France maybe before or near that time. I don't know. Its our choice in the end after all.

hustling bustling city, surrounded by deep dark woods, everyone can tell something isn't right, but no one is willing to say anything…

Question is, though, what are the "monsters?" I keep thinking of dragons and wyverns when I hear "Monster Hunter," but something tells me you're going for a more gothic-horror style for your monsters. In other words, the shitty sides of London and Paris during the Victorian and imperial eras of England and France. I say go with France, as everyone else always goes with Victorian England, and the French were way crazier than that at the same time.
