Do you draw them or use commission work of them? Use AI or any dress-up games like Gacha Club/Life or even Picrew? Or real-life pictures of people online??
Or… they don't have an appearance..yet
I use a mix of a few so I'm curious about what ya'll do.
I try to do a combination of things. Namely a very detailed written description, Heroforge (custom mini figure website), and sometimes real people. I have also used Artbreeder for a couple characters, but the mechanics for it are very twitchy/glitchy on my phone.
Oooo I love this question! I use a mix. So I use artbreeder, google, and I edit them in any art app. ^^
I try to mostly find real-life pictures of people online so I can get the characters as close as I possibly can to someone I can visualize irl- obviously not the most accurate thing so then picrew comes into play sometimes. Recently though, I haven’t done any picrews of my characters so I suppose mainly the first one and a very very heavily detailed description of them :)
I usually start by drawing them. When I write them, I like to give them two to four of their own unique traits, and either leave the rest to interpretation or imply their appearance.
I also like to, at least sometimes, make something about their appearance point to something that is important about their character. For example, for a character that is wealthy, strong (in all aspects) and not perfectly sane I highlighted her apparent physical strength and height, her jewelry and either a wide smile when she is angry.
I personally am godawful at using Artbreeder, and lowkey I don't trust AI, so I usually start with doodling them to get a general gist and/or look around on Pinterest for good vibes. Usually, I find it hard to find people who look exactly like what I'm going for, but Pinterest always helps with hairstyles & outfits.
I also will always and forever vouch for Picrew. It may not be the most accurate tool, but it's a great launch point for figuring out how you want a character to look. A couple of my OCs started as me fooling around on Picrew and now, they're fully-fledged characters!
(Also, from experience, a lot of artists want reference pictures when asking for commissions, so if that's the route you'd want to go, I'd recommend doing something like Picrew first.)
I usually start by making a picrew, and then search for face references on Pinterest. I also use Pinterest for their clothing, and I try to get most of their aspects. For anything really specific I created for them, I’ll either draw it myself or find a close-enough.
I use picrew or I just draw them, depending on my level of motivation lol
