I have a world I'm creating centred around 'The Lantern Order' an order devoted to monster hunting.
I want to create my own Bestiary of both original monsters, common knowledge monsters and others with my own twist.
So far here is the roster version.
Bestiary:
Gragnfeld
Dragons
Giants
Trolls
Werewolves
Vampires
Giant Spiders
Wraiths
I'm sticking to a low-medium fantasy medieval England styled setting. I was hoping maybe you guys had suggestions for any other monsters or twists on monsters. I'm going to keep Dragons in the traditional sense since they are rare occurrences and I like em the way they are. The Spiders I've already changed a lot and the Gragnfeld is my own. So I'm just hoping you have suggestions for monsters, not here or twists or concepts. Thx.
Here are some of my favourites/ones you could probably research and change up a little bit:
-Faes but not the Disney version oh no. I’m talking about ones like Changlings, tricksters that lure you into their realm forever. I for left other names but that could be something to look into.
-Hippocampus/Kelpies. Both classic water creatures in my mind along with Kappas and selkies
-Succubi/Incubi/Leviathans/demons in general . There are way more variations to demons than people think from different cultures around the world it is so interesting my guy. You could easily mash info up into your original demon interpretation. One of my favourites
-Dinjin. They are like genies but more evil if I’m remembering what I react correctly. I think there is a counterpart but I forget the name.
Overall I found that staying away from Greek/Roman, Norse and mostly Egyptian mythologies helped me find out more about different religions and their creatures. I do suggest looking at religions from Asia, South America, North America, Africa and the Middle East. Personally I find European monsters get reused a lot in fantasy settings so it was especially fun to research different culture.
Hopes this help and good luck!
I was reading over this and wondered about if I were to make a monster what would I make it and I briefly landed upon a sort of large snake-like creature, sorry that's so vague, I can't think of the word for what I'm thinking of at the moment, but it's something to build upon at least!

Do you mean like a Basilisk? Sorry, it's the only mythical snake monster I can think of rn
