I have been working on my villains lately. My favorite villain of mine is a goofball who is still smart ( he has fun being a villain and even though he eventually switches sides he still occasionally has some villainous tendencies ) So I was wondering what is your favorite villain of yours or what type of villain in general?
My favorite villain is an ex goddess named Darya. She really had the best intentions but just turned cold. And after doing some things that were against what the gods were allowed to do (she did it because she found out who killed her brother), she was cast out. That kind of broke her because that was all she knew, so now she hates the rest of the gods and everyone who supports them.
I… I'm basic I just like the sexy, maniacal, fun ones with a lot of charisma.
I like villains who embody this line "It's one thing to be evil, it's another thing to just be mean" I want villains who are evil, but aren't jerks
I have two kinds that are my fave:
The villain who seems totally evil in the first book but as time goes by and as the heroes (and the readers) mature, we realize they're basically just the disrespected father/mother-figure who ACTUALLY knows how to save the world and has been successfully managing things for years, only to have some ignorant, hotheaded kids butt in to try and "defeat" them because the kids aren't old enough yet to realize that not everything in the world is black and white.
And:
The villain who's just a straight-up inexcusable monster. The one that nobody will ever sympathize with, because the things they do are too horrible for words. They may not even have a lot of power or any unique traits—they're just the kind of twisted person that destroys your faith in humanity. Sometimes I get really tired of the 'sympathetic villain' trope because I think it makes things too easy on the heroes. having a truly brutal antagonist really raises the stakes and avoids the pitfall where the bad guy's cooler than the good guy.
i really like-
-
sympathetic villains- not usually for their backstory but that's acceptable too- but mostly for their goal. they can be a nasty bastard but if their goal makes sense and is understandable i just jhbfehbfkjwf they're great
+extra points if there's 'a better way' but they doing the evil path of achieving a goal just 'cause (basically like,, Obito 'nd Madara from Naruto,,, or Light from Death Note. they b bastards, but theiR GOALS-)
-
AND ALSO!! absolute psychos. they have no reason, they just kinda DO the EVIL THING and "WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT???" "idk i felt like it lol"
absolute G O L D i love it
'nd that's it thank you for coming to my TED talk-
I got two of mine that are favorites
- Redeemable villain that sees the bad thing as the only option in their scenario, they later betray their fellow villains to help the heroes
and might be crushing on one of them
- Horrible evil person who is willing to strike down and sacrifice "lesser beings" to achieve unseen power but is so nice and charismatic that many people choose to follow, almost persuades one of the heroes
There are two types of villains in this world. The villainous villains (ones who do bad things bc they want to) and villain-ish villains (ones who have a good reason behind their constant wrong-doing. The type of villain you'd cheer for. Not that people can't cheer for the other one too, but this one is just more commonly cheered for.)
I've been working on a villain that I really like. He is psychopathic but he doesn't really want to take over or anything. He is just very abusive and controlling and believes he is doing what is necessary.
So…. I guess I like the ones who think they are doing the right thing.
I just recently got one, it's the psychotic child. Not exactly creepy but they're unsettling and I love it. I have no Idea why. I just do.
I like villains that think they're doing the right thing, but they're wrong. Like ultimecia from ffviii, which is a tragic villain. She thinks compressing time is the only way to not be killed by the SeeDs, but that's exactly what brings her doom. Ultimecia just wants to live, and will do anything to survive. But in this desire she was blinded by hate.
Villains who are theoretically right but morally wrong.
For instance, was Thanos mathematically and fundamentally right about the idea of wiping out half of the universe? Yes. Was he morally right to separate children from their families and make people watch their bestfriends die in front of them? No. But he knew it was the only way and he was willing to sacrifice being the good guy in order to do what he knew was right.
I like it when characters are seen as villains from one perspective, but the heroes from another (such as Rhysand of the Night Court). I also like villains that are just evil. No tragic backstory, just evil because they can (such as Queen Maeve).
Villains who you can feel bad for but still not forgive, such as Queen Levana and Darth Maul, although I'm a sucker for a good chessmaster as well.
Also the sort of villain who's unpredictable and knows how to play the game, especially if they have an affable air to them.
That scene in Solo where Dryden Vos stabs some government official and then just pauses, catches his breath, wipes off/sheaths his weapon and goes "I don't know why I get so worked up. It's just a party." with a little smile gives me chills every time.
I like the villain who" unpredictable
I like a pretty wide range of villains. My villains don’t need to be relatable for me to like them.
I like the unpredictable ones. Either the unpredictable ones that aren’t really afraid to go to any measures to get to their final goal, or the ones that’ll do something completely unexpected, but generally stay within a somewhat ‘lawful range’ (at least when compared to the former.)
I’m a fan of the villains that know the line between ‘evil’ and being a prick. I sometimes like the villains that have almost an alter ego as well; one of the streamers I watch has a character like that (though as of recent events his original self is kinda…gone..)
I also like the monsters. I mean literal monsters; in terms of appearance. Maybe they might commit irredeemable acts, maybe they look absolutely horrifying but aren’t that bad. Oh and I like the monsters that have some sort of ‘charm’ to them.
It depends.
