so one my characters's backstory (Canarie) is that she and her dad fell into a black space (called Void) and they were subjected psychological trauma, especially Canarie. Note: her identity and her struggle with trauma is a key part of her character. When she gets extremely stressed, her father's soul possesses while her own soul recovers from the stress. Her psychological symptoms line up a bit with symptoms of dissociative identity disorder, and I realized it sounded similar after a while. I initially wanted to write her with dissociative amnesia, but I also really wanted to work with the possession plot point. I avoided the DID as much as possible because I didn't want to be disrespectful to anyone with the condition.
Any tips or advice from people with DID or professionals are greatly appreciated. I understand it is a difficult and controversial topic to write about in a fantasy story, so I want to present it in the most respectful way possible (or just scrap the possession plotpoint entirely).
