Hi, everyone. So I'm creating a black female character and I wanted to know what you guys thought about he name "Kani?" (pronounced KAH-nee) (almost like connie)
I like Kani! It is a food, though. A crab stick. Unless that bothers you, go off! It's pretty!
What country is she from? Tell me a lil bit about her personality. What style of name are you after like something leaning towards more african? Also I think Connie is a solid name, also I like the name Willow.
Jade, Jayla, Jasmine are also pretty good
@Adrenaline Lol, yea I know i's a crab. I don't mind it that much.
@Caboose I'm not necessarily looking for African sounding names, moreso i just wanted to know if the name sounded.. plausible? Like, does it seem like it could actually be someone's name versus something made up, y'know?
Ahhhh alrighty. Well in that case Connie works
I wouldn't worry about plausibility in making a character's name unless they are living in a totally realistic, non-alternate universe in any way. Unique names can add interest to your character! Do you know how many female protagonists are names "Sarah" or "Anna"? I think even using "Connie" (spelled just like that) would already be a unique choice just because it isn't an entirely common name. Hope this helped! :)
I like the name, I'd just be carful cause there's a lot of Hawaiian names that are really similar like Kikani, Kanani, Kanye, Kaukani, and a ton more. I don't know if this matters to you, maybe you even want a similarity to a Hawaiian name, or maybe I'm only noticing this because I have a Hawaiian name that sounds similar, idk, but this is just a tiny thing I thought I'd point out :) (also this is just my opinion but I kinda like Connie better I feel like its really unique)
@JumboJambo2020 and @"betsy.cant.write" thank you both for your inputs! I will take your opinons into consideration when naming her. Also, I do like the fact that it resembles a Hawaiian name, thanks for pointing that out.
Does anyone have trouble with last names, or is it just me??? I don't want it to sound completely cliche!
@Becca I get what you mean about not wanting to sound cliche, but I usually don't mind it. I don't usually have their last names frequently shown either way, xD
@Keeja Can you point me in the right direction?
@Becca You can use a name generator to help get the ideas flowing. And don't worry too much about last names, but make sure it fits well. You can always change it later if you don't find it's the right fit for you.
I agree with @Nina Roco. But @Becca, when I'm trying to come up with last names, I usually research common names for the particular ethnicity I'm looking for. A lot of my characters have slavic sounding names so I'll search "Russian last names" or something like that. Or I just use a last name generator.
A website I frequently use and can't recommend enough is Behind the Name. They have a huge selection of first and last names, as well as the origin, meaning behind it, and popularity through the years.
Oooooh thanks, really helpful! You guys are the best, seriously!!!
