“Hey back off Mate,” snarled Roo, “Josh isn’t a crybaby. What kind of person just out and out says that?”

“He mightn’t be now,” said Peter cooly “But just you wait. He’s gonna be hanging off you like a leech in an hour or two….”

He left to find a vacant seat. Josh looked as though he was about to break down.

“That was cruel.” Roo said, placing a consoleing hand on Josh’s shoulder.

“I’m used to it..” said Josh morbidly “I cope flak all the time from him…. he thinks I’m a waste of space.”

Roo stared at him. He thought back to those simpler times, back when they were all younger and everyone just seemed to get along with each other. Now, Roo thought, that reality was all but gone.

“For the record, I don’t think that about you.”

Josh looked at him, a smile beginning to crease over his mouth.

“Thanks.” said Josh.

The bus was beginning to slow down, and Roo looked out of the window.

“This is it,” said Josh, peering over him “St James College.”

Roo looked around him. It looked more like some sort of outdoor mall court. Two gigantic buildings, with large windows looking straight directly into the classrooms loomed over the main school entrance. Students hanging out near the bus stops, with their meticulously formal uniforms, all began pulling out their latest devices and hardware. Roo felt a slight bit of insecurity crease over him. He never even dreamed of a school so forward and progressive.

“What do you think?”, he heard Josh say.

“It’s ugh….. Very modern.” said Roo. He thought back to his simple old public schools, and how they all looked like a joke compared to what he was witnessing now.

When the bus pulled in, Roo and Josh (Along with the rest of the passengers) hopped off and stared around.

“What now?” said Roo, still gazing under the shadow of one of the immense buildings.

Episode 2 (continued.)

After 30 mins of looking around the large school for their grade block, Roo and Josh stored their things in nearby lockers, and headed off to their first class, which happened to be History. Roo looked around through the school corridors as he and Josh waited outside for their teacher to arrive. While Josh was checking to see he had all the right textbooks for the upcoming classes, Roo was busy doing people watching.

He watched as one small freckled kid was being interrogated by a grade 10 boy that was built like a rock boulder (Muscular, but with a bit of a gut). It felt wrong. The fact that no one was intervening to help him. The fact people just watched the kid in trouble. Roo suddenly began to be reminded of his brother…..

“You okay Roo?” asked Josh.

Roo snapped out of his momentary daydream.

“Huh? Oh, yeah fine…”

“Alright, because our teachers here.”

Roo saw as an old woman, who looked more akin to that of an underfed vulture, came shuffling down the corridor. They were told to enter, and everyone filed into the pristine clean classroom. As everyone began to take their seats down at the various work tables scattered around the classroom, Roo and Josh settled for one at the back of the room.

Each of the tables had four chairs for each group, but they had spares available. It was apparent to Roo that everyone had their own little cliques formed, and Josh was evidently not associated with any of them. He felt somehow obligated to take Josh under his wing….. He felt kinda bad for him.

The old woman at the front of the class began to speak.

“Good Morning class, I am your History teacher for this year, Mrs Linch. Please call out your name when it is called, as I mark the roll.” said Mrs Linch. Roo could tell just by her voice that she has a low tolerance for mucking up.

“Mr Jack Asgari?” inquired Mrs Linch, her eyes looking over her glasses.

“Here,” and a very handsome Persian boy raised his hand. Several of the girls in the class giggled.

“Mr Felix Barton?”

“Present”. A large kid raised his pudgy fingers into the air.

“Miss Naomi Choi?”

No one raised their hand.

“Am I to believe no one has seen Miss Choi?” said Miss Linch sternly.

Everyone shook their heads.

“Well then…” and she was about to cross the name off, before a Thai girl came bursting through the front door, looking very dishevelled.

“Sorry I’m late Mrs Linch!” said the girl, raising her voice a little more than was necessary. “I forgot which way the History block was and I got lost an-”

“Mrs Choi, where are your manners!” shrieked Mrs Linch in an outraged voice. “Not only are you late but you also have the gaul to come into this classroom shouting like a howler monkey! Now go and take a seat immediately!”

Naomi, as Roo assumed who this was, began looking around the classroom for a vacant seat, and her eyes landed on the table they were sitting at. She walked over and took a seat on Roo’s left. She had a very athletic physique, with a short wavy ponytail and a band-aid plastered on her nose. Roo wondered how she injured herself.

“Sup” said Naomi, a slight careless grin appearing on her face.

“Gday” said Roo, smiling back at her.

“H-hi” mumbled Josh, evidently fearful of her.

When Mrs Linch had finished marking the roll, she turned to the class, her bony fingers addressing them.

“Now then, this semester we are going to be looking into the founding of Australia, and the iconic moments that happened from up to present day.”

Some people in the class groaned, but Mrs Linch rambled on unfazed.

“This year we're going to be looking into a bit more on Aboriginal history, and how they reacted to Europeans visiting their land.”

“You say 'visiting' like they didn’t brutally massacre them upon arrival.” said Naomi abruptly.

“Students will raise their hand when they wish to speak in my class Mrs Choi!” said Mrs Linch waspishly.

As Linch continued to speak to the rest of the class, Naomi turned to Roo.

“I mean, I’m not wrong.” she whispered, grinning at him “They treated them like shit as soon as they arrived.”

“Yeah I’m aware.” said Roo “I have aboriginal blood on my dad’s side.”

“Oof,” said Naomi, “This years gonna be rough for you isn’t it?”

They began to quietly talk throughout the lesson, Roo noticed Josh continuing to listen along to the class. He wondered if Josh scared to join in the conversation for fears of Naomi bullying him like Peter. But there was something honestly blokey and matey about Naomi, and Roo was enjoying her company… He just wished Josh had the confidence to join them.

“Is he alright.” Naomi asked, watching Josh head down writing everything Mrs Linch was saying.

A. Yeah, he’s just a little shy.
B. He’s busy working.
C. Josh are you okay?
