I need some help figuring out how to kill a character. He's involved (formerly) with a gang, currently with a mercenary group, and was kidnapped by a secret society. He's also a total dick. Any ideas ?
Also if you need help with this as well then feel free to ask !
Is he on bad terms with the former gang? If so, maybe they consider him a dangerous loose end and sent somebody to take him out?
no not really. the gang kind of disbanded itself if that makes sense :/
hmm. what about the old 'jilted lover' trope? Aka an ex hates his guts so bad that they arranged his death somehow?
I feel like if he's a jerk, he's probably made enough enemies to guarantee a violent, premature death. Especially in his profession. Or maybe he just had bad luck on a mission and died to a stray bullet or something?
So you don't know exactly how he dies you just need him dead? (gosh that sounded wrong.)
Yup exactly. He really has made a number of enemies. I'm mainly killing him to drive my main character to her breaking point so i need it to be superrrrr sad. For some context (cos i have a feeling that'd be really helpful) this all take place in a newly post-apocalyptic world.
So she needs to watch him die, painfully, with sad last words.(again I feel weird typing that)
Yea exactly. or maybe watch him die from a distance, not being able to do anything.
Hi, you know what might also be a good death to really traumatize your character (lol) would be if they were really close (like physically next to) the other character when they died. You could have your character get their femoral artery (the one in your inner leg) cut, it would take up to a few minutes for them to bleed to death. They couldn't be saved without surgery and because this is post apocalypse I'm guessing their aren't a lot of doctors around. All your main character could do would be try to stop the bleeding (which would only make the other character die slower)
(Plus if this gang really hates this guy it might be pretty badass for one of them to just casually cut their leg open nbd and just walk away, because they know that's a death sentence.)
Oooh that's a good one and i do have a love for death by cut arteries (jeez thats bad). I'll definitely confider it !
Okay so for maximum sadness I'm going to have his pet rat try to protect his body from the people who come to clean it up. They kill the rat.
Oh
That already hurts tbh
I am kinda confused about one thing though, you said this guy was a jerk right? So how come the main character likes him enough to be deeply saddened and motivated by his death?
He's her brother. While their relationship isn't good (at all) she's perfectly convinced it is. He's her manipulator. He manipulates her into staying at his side because he has an obsession with her. He doesn't want her to rely on anyone but him so he kind of poisons her against anyone she starts getting too close to. She's convinced he's perfect because he's always been the one thats there for her and he's never done her wrong, that she knows of. Every time he has her push a friend away she thinks he's protecting her from a toxic person that's out to hurt her. This is why i really want his death to hit hard because she's gonna have an awakening about how he really wasn't perfect and it'll make grieving much harder.
ahhh I see! that sounds like a good character-driven story then, I understand why you're killing him now X'D
Yuppp so i needa tear my MC's heart to shreds
Hi. I need help killing a character. A few actually. The first one is murdered by the villain directly, in front of a bunch of her friends. So how would that effect other character. I mean they'd obviously be sad but… How do I work that into the story?None of my friends have ever been brutally murdered, and I hope none of yours have either but I still need help.
I also need a way to kill the love interest, make the MC feel like it was her fault or she could have prevented it, but he actually was somehow killed by the villain. I'm thinking explosives? The villain likes fire and all.
Any tips or ideas maybe?
so for the friends, have all of them react in different ways, because no one processes grief in the exact same way. some get angry, some get depressed, some try to pretend that nothings wrong so they don't fall apart, some try to find distractions, and a lot of other things. it depends on your characters' personalities. i don't know your story but you could add in some character conflicts. for example, if one of your characters get angry, they could lash out or make some kind of rash decision that affects the rest of the group, or someone could get mad at the person that's acting like nothing's wrong and accuse them of not caring. there's endless things you could do with this and it just depends on your plot and your character's personalities.
As for the love interest, you could have them do something dangerous, but beforehand they ask or try to ask for the MC's help, but she says no, or maybe she just seems busy so the love interest decides not to bother her with it and maybe one of her friends told her the love interest was going to ask for help and decided against it. or maybe the love interest dies in the same vacinity as the MC and she doesn't see that they're in danger until it's too late. or if you go with the explosives, maybe they know that there's a bomb or something and rush in to save someone and the MC tries to stop them, but she can't. or maybe they're rushing in the save the MC. the building could be on fire and maybe she's stuck under a fallen beam or something so the love interest goes in to save her, but she makes it out and they don't. those are just my ideas :)
Thanks, that might work well in my story, I'll see:)
I'd recommend watching overly sarcastic productions video on the topic. Many just to figure out how to make the death believable.
I might kill my main character too. Haven't decided yet >.<
ooh killing a main character is always hard ! are you planning on continuing the story somehow ?
