For one of my stories, I'm writing a character that is an established criminal. For his alter ego, I've decided to make him a detective so he can lead people off his own tracks. Is this a good direction to go?

It's an interesting concept, but I can say if he'll be a good character or not without any information on his motivations and personality

Don't be so worried about whether an idea is good. Just go for it, and you can hone it and make it good later. Honestly, loads of good stuff has come out of ideas that were considered 'bad.' It's just the process of creating.

I mean, yeah, it's a cool concept, that would be interesting to see how a detective throws people off in order to hide the fact that he did stuff. Now go do it lol

@dropsofjupiterin_herhair this is a cool idea, and i think this concept can really be built off into something cool

this sounds super interesting! i would love to read about that and there are a lot of places you could go with that! happy writing!

I like it a lot, I think it's a good concept. The character would have to be highly intelligent to pull that off. I think it's something that is best when the audience knows about it, like they're in on the secret, because that makes the other characters' obliviousness all the more frustrating and fun to to read about
