So I was ranting to my cousin about Mary Sues today (basically about how I don’t want any of my characters to be one), and Tadashi Hamada suddenly came up in conversation. My cousin pointed out how he didn’t really have any explicit flaws, but was still a lovable character for the short time he was on screen.
What do y’all think? Do you think he was a Mary Sue (I lowkey do. 😂)? If you do but you still like him as a character, what separates him from the other, more hateable Mary Sues?
Well i haven't really thought of that but he doesn't always have the answer. It shows how tired he was when working on Baymax, and the state of his room after
There's a difference between Mary Sues and characters fated for death. Not only are we viewing Tadashi through Hiro's eyes, making him seem perfect and likable, but he also dies too early for us to be aware of his flaws. He's a side character, too, so that makes him less of a Mary Sue. A Mary Sue is typically the protagonist.
Tadashi was more of a plot point than a character. He was Hiro's inciting incident –his death called Hiro into action. He had a clear-cut purpose and only existed for that purpose. He made no huge changes to the plot through his own actions, he wasn't unrealistically nice or perfect, he just died.
A Mary Sue doesn't die and stay dead. Not usually. I actually don't see how Tadashi could be a Mary Sue at all.
Yeah, I agree @writelikeyourerunningoutoftime.
Tadashi was only on screen for like, what, ten? Maybe fifteen minutes? That's not enough time to see flaws.
Although we did see one. He's wwwaaaayyyyyy too selfless.
Selfless to run into a ready-to-explode building for someone who technically would have already been dead.
