I have a couple of characters that I base off of their sign and I'm just basically wondering if that's dumb?

It’s not a bad idea, especially if their signs are important to the story. I don’t think it would harm anything as long as you don’t make them cardboard cutouts.

I think taking a trait or two from their signs traits makes for good inspiration, too, even if the story doesn't focus on signs at all.

yeah i do it when i cant think of anything, which is kinda often but I think its okay

Typically I make the character first, then use the sign they're most similar to to pick their birthday. If I ever feel they're too 2d, I could go and take some traits from their sign if I need to.

(just kidding sorry lol. i think using their zodiac signs as a jumping off point for developing their personalities is a fine strategy!)
