hello lovelies—
im struggling with a scene I'm not going to write for at least another few months for a HoO fanfic (bc you're not writing right if you're not fantasizing about the end of your book duh) and just,,, figuring out how it would look would really bring me peace of mind. let me explain the brief backstory of the situation-
so I have these two characters: Thomas (17, asian, ace, lover not fighter, softie) and Wesley (16, caucasian, bisexy, shoot first ask questions later, f*ck the government) and here are their Pinterest board bc why not? (( https://www.pinterest.com/solarisblond/s-e-e-k-e-r/thomas-peregrine/ & https://www.pinterest.com/solarisblond/s-e-e-k-e-r/wesley-bridger/ )) but so basically, they've grown up together as best friends through every high and low there is. family troubles, school drama, identity struggles, all of the above. and so I'm gonna write this from Wesley's perspective: so thomas goes missing one day, leaving behind a really bloody crime scene (Thomas was attacked by a hellhound but gets away with Coach Hedge whoops) but wes doesn't know that—all wes knows is that his best friend (basically brother) disappeared in a really horrible way and was presumed dead and has been gone for like a year. insert some minor character development yada yada—I'm only covering this part of his story really briefly bc Thomas is the main character but I can't figure out?? how I want them to reunite??
like a year later, Thomas is gonna show up on his doorstep. that's all. but? do they hug? cry? throw punches? I'm really not sure what do to so like,,, what would a typical reunion look like between brothers if one had been presumed dead for a year? cause really Thomas was off saving the world with the 7 demigods but wes doesn't know that lmao help please?
I do this a lot!! Reunions are my favorite to write!! Here are the steps I use to write one:
-
The Shock
The realization that the friend is there, alive, and well. It varies depending on the character, but it's usually a quiet shock. Usually some tears at the corners of the eyes. Drag this on for as long as you want, possibly some dialogue from Thomas, explaining or excusing or whatever else.
-
Character Reaction
I can't really help you with this one. It reaaalllyyy depends on the character. HOWEVER I can try to help based off of what I know. You said they have a very brotherly relationship. Brothers fight and argue a lot, meaning probably some angry words or disbelief. Brothers also care deeply, so probably a hug or some sort of forgiveness after that. So it would likely go something along the lines of:
"How DARE you?!" [character A] shouted, startling [character B]. "How dare you leave without any warning?! No phone calls, no note, not even any indication whether you were alive!"
"I-I'm sorry…" [character B] stammered. "I couldn't-"
"Do you know how worried I was? You scared me half to death, [B]!" [Character A] let out a noise that he wasn't sure was a laugh or a sob. "I was so worried."
"I…"
"Oh, shut up." [Character A] pulled {character B] into a tight hug. "I don't wanna hear excuses," he grumbled. [Character B] relented and shut his mouth.
Feel free to take that if you want it I guess but it wasn't very good 😅
aaaaaand step #3: reconciliation. Do they continue to be friends after that? Do they work together? Does Thomas tell Wesley everything? That's up to you, but probably they will at least still be friends. The story likely goes somewhere after that, and even if it doesn't, you need to allude to a continuation of their lives and story. Their lives dont end when the story does. Give them some sort of promise of a future, whatever it may be.
Hope this helped!
