I feel as if there is going to be a love triangle in my story, and I'm trying to avoid that. I can't simply remove a character from the whole story but what if I killed someone off? I wouldn't want to do that but if I can't find a way to avoid the triangle I might have too. :/ Any suggestions?
Tell me about the story then i can help.
Ok. So I see a love triangle forming between my characters Asia, Rio and Alois because they're just together a lot to figure things out. Asia dates Rio at the beginning of the story, but I haven't figured the whole relationship between them. Rio betrays Asia because he was working with a "prison" that wanted to kidnap her, and Rio succeeds in handing her over. But during their relationship, Rio realizes he actually likes Asia and tries to free her which results in getting him locked up and tortured. The thing is, Alois has parents in Germany which also work with the prison. They keep track of Asia through Alois and he doesn't know this. Alois and Asia had gone out a couple years ago from when the story takes place but Asia didn't think it was going to work out.. (I'm a new writer so I don't actually know much about writing yet. I just kind of sense this triangle forming because Alois still likes Asia quite a bit and he's very supportive and kind.)
Oh I forgot, Asia gets either hurt or sick (dunno yet) and goes into a coma. It turns out she knew something about how to disable the guards (the guards at the "prison" are robots) and so Alois and Rio are trying to figure out how to do it so that they can save the rest of the prisoners from being tortured.
If you want to go with the Alois+Asia romance, you could have Rio's betrayal be a dealbreaker for Asia. I mean, you say he realises he likes her and tries to free her, but does he try to free her only because he likes her, or does he genuinely change and become a better person and try to free her because handing her over was the wrong thing to do? Asia could still have feelings for Rio but decisively put an end to the relationship because it's very hard to be in a fulfilling intimate relationship with someone you can't trust.
Why did Asia think it wasn't going to work out between her and Alois? Did their personalities clash? Was it just awkward timing? Was she just not attracted to him? If you want to go with the Rio+Asia romance, you can definitely have Alois still like Asia and Asia not like him back 'that way'. There are plenty of supportive and kind guys out there and you'll notice that the girls they like don't automatically like them back just because they're supportive and kind.
It all comes down to Asia's personality and preferences. Both guys can like her, but it only becomes a love triangle if she likes them both back and 'can't choose' between them. If Asia has a clear preference for understandable reasons, you can keep all three of them alive and still avoid the dreaded love triangle.
Ok, thanks. This helps a lot. Makes me think about it more. :D
If your trying to avoid a love triangle you can try having Asia not fall in love with either of the guys. Maybe since her past relationship with Rio turned out so bad she has trust issues now. So that way she does not love either of the guys. She could also be too caught up in trying to escape the prison to have time for romance. Realistically she is probably not in the right mindset right now to be starting any type of romance.
Or at least not in the right headspace for any type of healthy relationship.
Alright, that makes sense. Thanks.
I haven't even read ur story but now I ship rio and alois
Oh man. XD I'm not sure how I feel about this.
