Depends on how the mental break happened, when it happened, and the severity. Seeing your parents' throats slit when you wake up for school is one thing, walking into the kitchen to find your father hacking your 10 month old puppy into pieces for dinner is another

The younger it happened, the weirder you can make it. Assuming the cause happened before the age of 10, you can have the character believe in worldwide innocence. "My great-great grandma is sleeping!" (Dead people are sleeping.)

As someone who is writing a character who is currently going through the cause of her eventual mental break, I can't tell you definitively where to stop. Depends on genre, target audience, etc.
