When supplying a photo of your characters, where do you get them?
Like, do you…
Find a pic of someone online?
Draw it?

I just find a picture and then I base my character off of them.

Either that, or I have someone draw them.

I either draw it or look online. It’s usually the latter though, since my drawings are crap :P

I like to use online dollmakers (like at azaleasdolls.com or at missangestgames.com). These provide me with a way to get the character’s hair, skin tone and clothing style down real quick. It doesn’t work for created species or diverse body types, but they are a really good resource for character creation.

Honestly, I don't even know. For some characters, I draw them. For others, I have them drawn. And for others, I just search up actors/actresses I think would fit the role. Depends on what I'm feeling at the time I create the character.

I get a vague notion of what I want them to look like, and then usually find photos/drawings of people that have a close semblance to what I picture, and then draw out what I see in my head using those photos as reference. Something like that I think.

I usually just draw mine. Sometimes I look at pictures or dollmakers to get inspiration for outfits because I suck at coming up with clothes for my characters.

I have my friend draw them when he's not working on other stuff. Other than that, they stay in my head, rattling around until I need them.

I draw my characters, or rarely ask for a visual reference from someone. In other cases i base the characters on others, with some changes

Typically, I like to write down the physical characteristics that are most prominent in them (i.e facial features and whatnot), and then either 1) find someone who looks like that character (usually I use the magic google), 2) actually draw that character (even though my drawing skills are actual trash), or 3) combine both of the previous choices, by finding someone with similar enough characteristics, then draw them, and incorporate the rest of the characteristics I had wrote down.

I draw them. I am a very slow drawer but I'm pretty good

I like to dip my toes in things.

First, I go: What is the most aesthetically pleasing scenario, and which characters fit in these things perfectly?

In other words… what do I like to see in other characters? I then take tidbits, and combine them. And then I take my favorite imperfection, and instill it into the character

Example: Sherlock Holmes.
Example: Tony Stark
Example: David Livingstone
Example: Jason Mraz

David Livingstone and Jason Mraz are real people, and that also stabilizes the image you're about to form. That way, you don't end up with stereotypical traits; Actual humans can give your character the uniqueness you need:

Jonathan Wilde: (favorite trait) Brilliant in his field- whether it be art, science, or even business- (favorite imperfection) but slightly unsocial, and therefore standoff-ish.

Boom. I have a shell of a character.

Then, I dig deeper; because my character does this, then he's going to look like this. If he constantly is poking his nose into blind corners, seeking adventure, he's going to get a scar.

I normally google the people that I represent my character off of, and take a multitude of things from that. I might give him Sherlock's hair, Tony Stark's head shape, and the eyes of Jason Mraz… but I also go on Pinterest, and scroll through random pictures of [Insert Time Period] clothing models, and when I see the one I like, I use it.

It all depends upon the backstory of your character. The reason I use other people's characters, is that it's also an excellent way to model how things could turn out; and then I find common features, and further incorporate them.

I've spent way too much time finding character pictures (It's a great way to procrastinate) and I find Pinterest works better for finding pictures than just using google. I've created a board full of character inspiration. I find Pinterest has a wider variety of pictures with different races and looks, and nice pictures are easier to find. Since some of my characters have unique looks (I have one character with navy blue hair and another with different coloured eyes and white hair) I use a photo-editing app to adjust my pictures. The one I like most is called Snapseed. I use the brush setting and I'm able to play with temperature (make things appear more blue or more orange) and exposure (make things lighter or darker) and using just that I can change eye and hair colour, and I can adjust skin tone slightly too. I mean, I could draw my characters too, but that takes a lot of time; editing photos is so much faster. Maybe at some point I'll draw them.
