forum How do I know that I'm not making my character's personalities the same and not based on my personality or responses?

@YourNightmare

These are just my main characters
Bree: sarcastic, orphan, street and book smart.
Brexley: usually goes by Brex and total bad ass, like skilled in fighting and stuff like that; super sarcastic but kind and warm at times. street smart.

@Kaloobia

I'm going off your title question here, take this with a grain of salt if you want haha: you should never be afraid of your characters resembling you, or your own personality traits. Each and every one of your characters WILL have a piece of you, because they are your creations and because as creators we tend to write and design what we know and are familiar with: ourselves being the closest to this. So that's definitely something you shouldn't be worried about.
About characters being similar: it's okay to have characters with somewhat similar traits, because it would make sense for them to be hanging out/friends/associating with each other: I think the key here is giving them different motivations, and different ways of advancing towards their goals. The way someone solves a problem often distinguishes who they are and how they're different form others. So I'd suggest starting from there.
Hope this was helpful!

I can very much agree with @Kaloobia. One of my characters, Nykidia, has my optimism and parts of my depression. Night has my sarcasm and anger. Flyn has my charm (Ha! What's that?). Each character will come from the same person but can act simaler and different.

Exactly! :-)

If you have trouble with differing responses, try a bunch of very short situational prompts, such as “X has a big paper due tomorrow. What do they do?” or “X is tasked with making Thanksgiving dinner. How screwed are they?” These only require a couple of sentences response, but if you do some of them for all of your characters, it can give you a good idea of what they’re like and how everyone is different.

@Kaloobia Your info really helped. Thank you a bunch. But I don't want my characters to be too similar you know? Because the problem is they come from two totally different stories. I just don't want people who are reading the stories to ask if they're like the same person because they're not. They have different motivations and different goals. They have different lives and histories. I just fear that I'm putting TOO much of myself into them and the way the talk or act. Because when I'm writing them, I always tend to have them answer or act the way I would in that situation. And yes your's and the other's advice has really helped with me not fearing that they resemble me, I just don't want them to resemble me too much. Because I fear that in the future when I make more characters, they will all resemble me and cause them to act and think way too similar. Do you happen to have any tips about that? Or is it something that I can hopefully like grow out of as I continue to write? Thanks a bunch.

I have an old character that was called Kata and I built both Night and Nykidia off of her so it's ok. That old world is scraped along with Kata but it's fine to have similar characters. People have similar personality's.

@YourNightmare

Alright, that makes me feel better, thanks. I was checking out your characters so I could get a feel about what you were saying, and they're really nice. They sound interesting. Good job on your characters and world.

@YourNightmare

of course. But if I'm being honest, I really don't know how. What I did was click on your name and it took me to all your characters and items and everything.

@YourNightmare

Thanks. Yeah, that's what I was thinking and trying to go for. I was trying not to make it a lot like the Once Upon A Time Neverland or like the ones in the stories.

This thread is wonderful! I've always secretly wondered the question that was asked here, but never known how to put it into words, and also worried what others would say to my question.
