Hey all! Im having the hardest time with deciding on a 'job' for my character and need some help.
My character's name is Skya. She can transform into a Bengal Tiger. She is part of a 'magical' race that can transform into A specific animal, called Animen. In their culture, they have two classes. She is part of the lower class who are pretty much communal slaves to the upper class.
So, i need a medieval style occupation that doesnt have a great deal of respect towards it. I have already ruled out farmhand, miner, and whore as they feel too generic for a main character.
Working with animal hides to strip the fur off them and turn them into leather. From Wikipedia: "Formerly, tanning was considered a noxious or "odoriferous trade" and relegated to the outskirts of town, amongst the poor. Indeed, tanning by ancient methods is so foul smelling, tanneries are still isolated from those towns today where the old methods are used." It's kind of a gross, smelly job, though, so this may not be right for your character.
Scullery maid
Doing all the kitchen jobs that no one else wants to do. From this PDF: "In great houses, scullery maids were the lowest-ranked and often the youngest of the
female servants and acted as assistant to a kitchen maid. Along with the junior kitchen-maid, the scullery maid did not eat at the communal servants' dining hall table, but in the kitchen in order to keep an eye on the food that was still cooking. Duties included the most physical and demanding tasks in the kitchen, such as cleaning and scouring the floor, stoves, sinks, pots and dishes. After scouring the plates in the scullery, she would leave them on racks to dry. The scullery maid also assisted in cleaning vegetables, plucking fowl, and scaling fish."
Your character could also be the personal servant of an upper-class character who gets them to do all the odd jobs they don't want to do and basically wait on them hand and foot.
I'm no expert, but I have an idea that might work. Make her a cleaner for a dangerous job, like a blacksmith's assistant. She's the one cleaning out hot coals, sweeping dust and shavings from the grinding wheels (that may or may not still be running). She's the one keeping the metal steady when they're hammering a large piece, and she has minimal protection because the blacksmith doesn't necessarily like her.
Cottars and cobblers are also options; cottar is sort of like a general labourer but very low-skilled; this was usually a job taken by elderly or handicapped. A cobbler is a shoemaker.
If she lives in a town, you'd want to stick to things like carpentry and blacksmithing. If she lives in the countryside, you'll be hard pressed to find a job that fits her since you've ruled out farmhand. The only countryside-ish occupation I could think of that isn't strictly farmhand related would be a miller.
