forum Help with killing off one of my bois

So I’m planning on killing off one of my main five characters for my story. I need to make it emotional and very heartbreaking for the reader since it is a major death and I don’t want that to be messed up. If y’all have any tips to make an effective way to write this that would be much appreciated but before this is how I want to kill him off explain in a brief way that’s kinda shitty:

So he and my other characters are trying to stop an evil goddess from destroying the world but she is weakened so there is time to stop the chaos. She knows that they are trying to stop her so since she is a goddess of demons she summons a demon ( who is going to be punished for reasons) and turns him into a naga which in my world is like a human-zombie-snake crossover. This can be transmitted though fluids like blood and saliva. So when they have to fight and kill the naga my character gets the disease and slowly starts to transform into one. It starts with eyes changing then scales appearing along with fangs. Sense are heightened and then aggressive rabid behaviour begins too. This takes about two weeks and is extremely painfully for his the body. Lastly his lower half becomes a snake tail and he tries to kill the other four main characters. One of the girls does end up killing him since she is the only one powerful to do it because reasons. And I think is worth mentioning that that is not the ending part of the story, they still need to continue in to save everyone.

Frequent scenes of him begging to be killed before it's too late. lots of late nights wondering if they're doing the right thing. (I'll be back with more once I've had my nightly sleepy time.)

Ok, once he has been stabbed/whatever happened, the girl who does kill him should realize what she's done and she drops to her knees and drops her weapon. and then the almost dead person comes back to reality and he's all like "thanks" and then he starts saying a bunch of sentimental shit to the rest of them and the girl is like "oops sorry"

All of this would be more dramatic in the real book

another idea, kill him when the character is right about to put their ship in cannon, so you basically just have the loved one be like "AHHHHH OH MY GOSH" and stuff like that and the other characters will be like "oh, __ said to say that ___ loves you"

before hand have the characters talk about their dreams and future plans have the soon dead character and another see their close to theirs goals a bet on who'll reach it with the other character seeing their closer (to make it seem like he more likely to die). During the fight the other character seems like he's going to get the naga deices, the son to die character gets it (maybe even acedently, and before he realizes he has it he makes a comment of how the other guy can't die because he's so close to his goal)
