Tell me about your parents and their children in your stories! Just a nice discussion to discuss our characters and their kids (either adopted or not.)
I’ll start off with something I’ve yet to write (and it will be a long while before it comes into play; the whole thing begins in the second book and I’m only starting to rewrite the first)
Javor “Jav” Hnilo and Medo.
Jav was born on a spaceship, and grew up there. After humans fled Earth via the Haven, a repurposed Omnoi ship, they surveyed the cosmos, only to return to Earth centuries later. All of Jav’s current generation has never set foot on a planet before - which is everyone on the ship, minus the AI (yet to be named).
Jav is apart of the second wave to the planet Earth after the first wave loses contact with Haven. Unfortunately for him, this time the Omnoi are alerted of a few ‘capsules’ trying to get through their radars, and attack. Jav and his capsule are among the survivors, but they’re sent off course to some countryside and forest. Upon crash landing, the wildlife takes its turn on the survivors…
Medo is a human, but not quite. Almost a different breed of human, with eyes suited to seeing in the dark as opposed to daytime. She prefers to sleep during the day, and well, wake up during evening and proceed as normal. Her family originates from experimentation by the Omnoi, and Medo is one of their results, but not quite what they wanted. She’s set free into the wild where she makes her home in what may have been a barn.
Barely scraping by, she rarely ventures too far from the barn, for even she understands the risks of the world around her. New Earth - a transformed ecosystem. While able to understand and grasp what languages are, she’s never spoken in any of them. The guttural and rough language of the Omnoi, too hard for a human to speak without sounding like a fool.
Eventually, after lots of strife and being stalked by a predator that likes to take its time with hunting, Jav runs to the open fields and finds shelter in the barns, where he comes into contact with Medo soon enough. He tries to speak to her - in a few different languages, before realizing that she has no clue what he’s saying aside from tone as of right now.
Essentially, he’s limited to staying still and waiting out what lurks outside. Medo is almost bitter at him for bringing such a dangerous creature to her abode.
Their relationship starts out rocky at first, with Jav not understanding how to get through to her, until offering her some food, which even then - takes a while for her to trust. He sticks by the barn for a while, trying to get into contact with the survivors, but nothings working. It’s the night before he decides to leave does the alien get tired of waiting and launches its attack, where through a combined effort of Medo and Jav, they permanently wound it and trap it long enough for them to run off.
Although Medo is capable by herself, she’s still a child. Just one that’s not used to certain things. Medo decides to tag along, at first following him from a distance but beginning to trust more and more as time goes on.
To describe their relationship, simply put: Medo, although she doesn’t trust easily, is very loyal. Knowledgeable on the flora and wildlife of New Earth. She begins her story not understanding a lot of things, but begins to realize the importance of attachment and emotion.
Jav’s just relieved to have been able to get through to Medo. He’s very protective towards her, but greatly enjoys teaching her about the world and “where he comes from” (aka, as first worded to Medo, pointing at the night sky “There.”) While some people treat Medo’s knowledge of the world as a way to look into the Omnoi structure, Jav’s not a fan of that and will rather tell them off of doing that. Even if he grew up with an artificial mother (Jav was a unique case, his mother died when he was young from an accident) he still got to enjoy his childhood, and wants the same for Medo, even if she never got to do so.
Personality wise…
Medo: slow to trust. Thinking, curious, holds grudges and will remember things said or done to her from years back. Loyal, values bonds that she makes with others (more visible as story progresses.)
Jav: kind of stoic at first. he doesn’t really laugh at a lot of stuff. pretty selfless, though. caring. perceptive, at first somewhat of a risk taker but becomes more cautious as the story progresses.
Jav doesn’t directly say “she’s my daughter” at first, that statement comes later on. Arguably, the other characters are the first to say it as opposed to himself.
