Tell me about your parents and their children in your stories! Just a nice discussion to discuss our characters and their kids (either adopted or not.)

I’ll start off with something I’ve yet to write (and it will be a long while before it comes into play; the whole thing begins in the second book and I’m only starting to rewrite the first)

Javor “Jav” Hnilo and Medo.

Jav was born on a spaceship, and grew up there. After humans fled Earth via the Haven, a repurposed Omnoi ship, they surveyed the cosmos, only to return to Earth centuries later. All of Jav’s current generation has never set foot on a planet before - which is everyone on the ship, minus the AI (yet to be named).

Jav is apart of the second wave to the planet Earth after the first wave loses contact with Haven. Unfortunately for him, this time the Omnoi are alerted of a few ‘capsules’ trying to get through their radars, and attack. Jav and his capsule are among the survivors, but they’re sent off course to some countryside and forest. Upon crash landing, the wildlife takes its turn on the survivors…

Medo is a human, but not quite. Almost a different breed of human, with eyes suited to seeing in the dark as opposed to daytime. She prefers to sleep during the day, and well, wake up during evening and proceed as normal. Her family originates from experimentation by the Omnoi, and Medo is one of their results, but not quite what they wanted. She’s set free into the wild where she makes her home in what may have been a barn.
Barely scraping by, she rarely ventures too far from the barn, for even she understands the risks of the world around her. New Earth - a transformed ecosystem. While able to understand and grasp what languages are, she’s never spoken in any of them. The guttural and rough language of the Omnoi, too hard for a human to speak without sounding like a fool.

Eventually, after lots of strife and being stalked by a predator that likes to take its time with hunting, Jav runs to the open fields and finds shelter in the barns, where he comes into contact with Medo soon enough. He tries to speak to her - in a few different languages, before realizing that she has no clue what he’s saying aside from tone as of right now.
Essentially, he’s limited to staying still and waiting out what lurks outside. Medo is almost bitter at him for bringing such a dangerous creature to her abode.

Their relationship starts out rocky at first, with Jav not understanding how to get through to her, until offering her some food, which even then - takes a while for her to trust. He sticks by the barn for a while, trying to get into contact with the survivors, but nothings working. It’s the night before he decides to leave does the alien get tired of waiting and launches its attack, where through a combined effort of Medo and Jav, they permanently wound it and trap it long enough for them to run off.

Although Medo is capable by herself, she’s still a child. Just one that’s not used to certain things. Medo decides to tag along, at first following him from a distance but beginning to trust more and more as time goes on.

To describe their relationship, simply put: Medo, although she doesn’t trust easily, is very loyal. Knowledgeable on the flora and wildlife of New Earth. She begins her story not understanding a lot of things, but begins to realize the importance of attachment and emotion.
Jav’s just relieved to have been able to get through to Medo. He’s very protective towards her, but greatly enjoys teaching her about the world and “where he comes from” (aka, as first worded to Medo, pointing at the night sky “There.”) While some people treat Medo’s knowledge of the world as a way to look into the Omnoi structure, Jav’s not a fan of that and will rather tell them off of doing that. Even if he grew up with an artificial mother (Jav was a unique case, his mother died when he was young from an accident) he still got to enjoy his childhood, and wants the same for Medo, even if she never got to do so.

Personality wise…

Medo: slow to trust. Thinking, curious, holds grudges and will remember things said or done to her from years back. Loyal, values bonds that she makes with others (more visible as story progresses.)
Jav: kind of stoic at first. he doesn’t really laugh at a lot of stuff. pretty selfless, though. caring. perceptive, at first somewhat of a risk taker but becomes more cautious as the story progresses.

Jav doesn’t directly say “she’s my daughter” at first, that statement comes later on. Arguably, the other characters are the first to say it as opposed to himself.

Mr. Kenny, Bala, and Orbei: The aged Mr. Kenny lost his wife and children years ago, but to this day refuses to accept it. So when he met Bala, a fat six year old with crippled legs, abandoned on the side of the road, he immediately took him in. Orbei, an empathetic, oddly wise twelve-year-old girl, kind of adopted Mr. Kenny. He calls her Bella a lot - she looks a lot like his dead daughter, and sometimes he can't tell the difference.

I honestly love Mr. Kenny's story, he's one of my favorite mc's I've got currently. I could go on, but unfortunately I'm running out of time and I still want to talk about:

Florence and Ronan: Florence, the most 'sweet old gran'ma' grandma you can picture, lives alone with her grown son Ronan. Ro's father left the picture very early, and Florence picked up a…strange job to support them both. Local gangs actually paid her to make them cookies, pies, and other desserts for special gang events, and she became fast friends with almost every gang member from almost every gang in her crime-ridden city. She's since moved to the country, but she still has her contacts, and Ro grew up with a Godfather, Godmother, 'adopted' dad, several aunts and uncles, and a legal secondary guardian, all gang members. Her and Ro maintain a neutral position with all the gangs, sometimes being the only point of peace and agreement between them.

And lastly:

Peyton, Titan, and Gemma: Gemma is a human, Titan is VERY not. Peyton doesn't care, she adopted them both and loves them both very, very much. She's the only one who knows Titan as a person, not as a war machine. She's raising them both, even though she doubts Titan will ever mentally mature past the age of a three year old. She has no idea what his life-span will be, but she's confident, that should he outlive her, he'll always have his sister by his side.

Harli and Oscar
Harli's a seventeen year old whose lost everyone he's ever known to the bombing. He found Oscar when he was taken out of his small town on a mandatory adventure to see the world.

Oscar's a nine year old whose never been outside his house and has made friends with the things in his attic and has recently found his mother's mutilated remains in a freezer in his basement, then promptly taken out of his home on the See The World Program. That's how he found Harli. after the program, Harli takes Oscar home with him, so Oscar never has to go back in that house again. They can heal together from the pain of their pasts. Also grow the most magnificent garden ever.

Walter, Kyle and their son Lincoln
Walter's Accident prone, he's always got scraped knees, even as an adult.
though when he was young he thought he had his life figured out from the beginning, he was going to marry a nice girl, raise a kid and all that jazz, though he really didn't want to think about any of that yet. He just wanted to play video games and roller skate through the halls of Clement. He met Kyle at a group for screw ups, kids who aren't who their parents want them to be. Kyle was playing a game on his hand held, when they were supposed to be listening. Kyle noticed Walter staring at him, and asked him what his problem was.
Walter said "Nothing"
And looked away. After the group meeting Kyle invited Walter to hang out, they went to an arcade. and have been inseparable since.

Kyle's the one whose prone to dad jokes, He was what you could call a troubled kid, he'd stay out late enjoying the quiet side of the world, he'd spend days playing video games, He'd get yelled at by his parents for existing. He's been banned for life from a few stores and was widely ignored by his peers. Maybe not that troubled.. Anyway, Once he found Walter he felt a bit freer, They'd skate to the arcade almost everyday, Walter with his roller skates, Kyle with his skateboard. They grew closer and closer, telling each other things they've never told anyone. One time they were talking and Kyle just popped a question, "Hey, bro, could we kiss or somthin'?"
Walter was kind of startled, in shock maybe, by this, he'd never thought about kissing, he knew he'd have to do it to get married, probably, but he'd never wanted to do it. Not with anyone acceptable at least. His parents were expecting him to find a girlfriend or something, find a wife.. He'd never thought about not doing that.
Walter just said "Sure"
But after Walter quickly added "But, man, I have to marry a girl. my parents want me to be like them I think"
"Dude, Why would we have to get married?"

Lincoln's The strangely morbid child of two gamers, slight bro dudes. He's now fifteen. though seemingly emotionless he loves his fathers dearly. When he started acting strange as a small child, his dads just went with it, not really knowing if they're doing parenting right, but loving their creepy son anyway. When they got Lincoln a cat, Lincoln wanted to name the cat Corpse. They let him. Now they all call the sweet cat Cory. Though the cat's about at the end of her life. (Lincoln wants to be there to comfort her when she goes, but he's in boarding school)
Lincoln's gone off to boarding school, though he still keeps in touch with his fathers. He's made practically no friends and doesn't want to make any, he's turned down all offers. Though he does have one thing he's planning his whole life around. He wants to change the world anyway he can, he wants to leave a lasting mark. His fathers support him 1000% and just want him to be happy.

Godfried 'The Huntsman' and Ron 'The Black Wolf' (In my world bastards receive no surname)

Godfried is a knight from an order dedicated to hunting monsters (basically monster hunter turned knight) tasked with killing The Black Wolf, the royal bastard who has been permanently stuck in the form of a Black Werewolf for 5 years. He has been locked inside the old castle gardens/greenhouse for the entire time trapped as a mindless beast.

Godfried is only hired when The Black Wolf is reported escaping in the evenings to hunt and returning to rest. Godfried fights the black wolf once but lets it run away to instead save peasants. The next night the escape route has been sealed and all Godfried has to do is kill him.
When he finds the Black Wolf all he sees is a whimpering, malnourished Werewolf hiding in a corner wearing a silver clawed glove around it's left hand.
The fight ensues and both Godfried and the Black Wolf nearly die. Godfried manages to cut off The Black Wolf's left hand. When he does the royal bastard is returned to human form unconscious with both hands. Godfried shifts him into the moonlight to see if he can notice any changes.
During his investigation before the fight he discovered that Ron was mistreated by his family on account of being a bastard. So Godfried offers to take the boy back to the order to join and be raised well. The king full knowing that since the boy was cursed under his own roof agrees.

Ron is then raised by Godfried despite already being an 18 year old. Godfried is the father that Ron always wanted. 12 years later is where the story starts and the pair are still insuperable.

(Most of these are found family because I love that trope)
Renata and Tobias, aka crabby soldier mom & sweet baby "god"(?)
In a version of modern-day Earth where mysterious otherworldly beings, who call themselves Erased Ones, are appearing in Midwest America and causing chaos due to their confusion at their own arrival, Renata is part of a government organization created for the purpose of understanding and controlling these beings. At least, she was part of that organization. Several years ago she began to disagree with their methods and morals and went rogue, going into hiding in the desert so she could wash her hands of the whole business. That worked for a while….until she found a five-year-old boy on the side of the road and he followed her home. He called himself Tobias, and he was anything but human. He was a fresh Erased One, completely lost and helpless now that he was trapped in a physical body (which is what happens to his kind when they come to Earth). Renata saw what he was immediately and wanted nothing to do with him, but he was a very sweet, determined kid and eventually she found herself teaching him about Earth so he might survive. She was kind of perfect for the job due to her background as an agent, and she knew everything Tobias would need to be safe and comfortable.
Over time, she slowly began to realize that there was something different about him. He wasn't like any Erased One she'd encountered before–he was wiser, with unique and frighteningly powerful abilities. Renata knew she had to keep him out of the government's hands, and together they built a secret hideout in the desert for themselves and any other Erased Ones they rescued from the humans. Renata understands that Tobias is probably much stronger and smarter than her, but she still sees herself as his protector, and that makes a big positive impression on him. It helps him turn into a good person instead of the world-destroyer he could've been.
Luke and Mike, aka ex-fighter mechanic and his grandson
Luke is a guy who's had his own share of adventures back when he was a homeless teen in a crime-ridden city, helping his girlfriend rescue her brother from a crazy millionaire bent on creating an army of kids with artificial superpowers. Back then, all he knew how to do was fight, and he was darn good at it, but for the sake of his pacifist gf, he settled down and learned how to fix cars so he could support them both. Fast forward a few decades, they live in a modest house behind his machine shop. Their single daughter made a bad choice in her husband, who ran off after they had two kids of their own. Luke and his wife feel responsible for her and their grandkids, so they all live together. The younger grandchild is Mike, who was too young when his dad left to remember him at all. The only father-figure Mike has now is Luke, and Luke is very aware of that. He's a bit of a gruff, no-nonsense old man by now, but he's Mike's favorite person and they hang out almost constantly. Over time, as a civil war starts and the stability of their country crumbles, Luke decides to teach Mike to fight the way he used to–a little-known technique/philosophy that's particularly effective against supernatural enemies. Mike is a fast learner and these skills continue to serve him for the rest of his life. I'd love to talk more about them as individuals but that's another story XD
Vali and Enni, aka tired reformed villain and his arch-enemy's little sister
Vali: my first villain-turned-depressed-good-guy. He's evolved a lot over the years, and I'm still figuring out his finer details. But the bones of his story remain the same.
Basically, he's a type of immortal being in my stories called Intunera. They were created specifically to cause havoc and suffering on Earth. Therefore, they're almost all selfish, cruel, destructive, and power-hungry. You'd think that living for hundreds of years would mature them, but they're actually stuck with the brains of reckless, moody teenagers, and never really reflect on the consequences of their actions. Plus they're made of a magical energy that's both psychologically and literally toxic to all other life forms, so they couldn't really do good even if they tried.
Vali is no exception. Except in his case, he picked a fight with the wrong person and lost. Specifically, a being made of the opposite kind of energy called a Happa-brynn. The Happa-brynn seriously injured him, he got a very rare magical fever which permanently infected him with the other kind of energy, and as a direct result of this, all the regret and trauma and identity struggles he'd skipped for the last 600 years finally caught up with him.
So he's a good person now, right? Well….except that he's lost most of his powers and become a broken shell of his former self who feels like he can never atone for all the horrible things he's done. He was rejected by his own kind and is feared and hated by everyone else, so he's an outcast in constant pain who still poisons everything he touches, but now he feels guilty about it.
Enter Enni! A young orphan Happa-brynn who's being hunted by Vali's old boss. Vali at first tries to avoid her, because obviously he and Happa-brynn don't mix and now they trigger his PTSD on top of everything else. But his new conscience won't let him abandon her, and besides, she's the only person in the world who wants to be friends with him. He decides to take her back to her family where she can be safe, and during the journey they become very close. Of course, when they find the other Happa-brynn, they still think he's evil and try to attack him, but Enni manages to convince her family to forgive him. He becomes her adopted big brother and finally finds a home. He gets a job at a factory processing toxic chemicals because it's perfectly safe for him, and slowly, slowly, starts to heal.

Aight.

Marco and his four children, Flippers, Sensei, Lifevest, and Headlamp.

The four kids were probably not even twelve when they started working at Marco's company. The company is a dangerous one that requires teams of four to go to these filthy islands to harvest eggs from these mindless (but extremely violent), half-human half-reptile lifeforms. The four kids become the best employees Marco's ever had, and invites the how 15-year-olds to come have dinner with him. They're shocked because nobody had ever seen Marco's face. So the four of them go to dinner with Marco, he's a scraggly 40-something year old with a cigarette in hand. His eyes are shiny and the same color of the eggs the kids harvest. He asks about the kids families and they each answer differently.

Flippers - I watched my dad shoot my mom when I was ten and I left home that night and I haven't seen him since.
Sensei - I don't know what happened to my parents, I lived with my grandfather until he just recently passed of natural causes.
Headlamp - I have amnesia, so I don't know what the heck happened to my family.
Lifevest - I mean, I left home because of reasons, and I really don't have a desire to go back.

And so listening to those kids, Marco decided right then and there to adopt them.

Marco is a good dad, he checks in on his kids daily to make sure they're okay, even if he doesn't see them a lot. He takes good care of them, he provided a large house, fully furnished, and a ton of money to let them go get whatever they want. He loves and cares for them all, but Flippers worries him.

Flippers has extreme IED, and she lashes out at her (sorta?) siblings a lot. She screams and throws things and yells a lot of really hurtful things. After each episode, she breaks down crying because she doesn't mean to hurt her family. She thinks they all hate her because of what she is and that nobody should ever love her. She's suicidal (I know poor bab) and has actually attempted a few times, but has been saved last minute by one of her siblings. Marco is constantly checking in on Flippers, but she brushes it off as being fake. Everytime Marco gets a call from the hospital, his heart stops and he can't breathe. He rushes over, and is relieved to see her alive.

Out of all his children, Sensei is Marco's best friend.

Sensei is level-headed and cool. He is good at talking to people and has a respect for every person or being he meets. Sensei always talks to Marco, asking him how he's doing or if he needs help. Marco loves that someone cares for him as much as he cares for them. Sensei never gets mad, ever, and he will always listen to the other side of the argument. Marco sees Sensei as the oldest sibling, even though he's the same age as the other three.

Headlamp is the one to always make Marco laugh.

Headlamp is confused all the time, but they usually catch on later. They're usually optimistic and good at finding really bad dad jokes to lighten the mood. Headlamp has a smile that says "I have no idea what the heck is going on but I'm happy to be here!" They have this innocent cluelessness about them and their comments always make Marco laugh a little bit. Marco sees Headlamp as the youngest, innocent to the cruel world around them and always has a smile on their face.

Lifevest is the one Marco goes to for advice.

Lifevest is alert and detail-oriented. She is amazing at remembering the small things and even better at putting together events for the big things. She never sugar-coats anything and will always give you her honest opinion. She's really good at fashion (lol stereotypes) and is actually amazing at putting stuff together. She decorates the house her and her siblings live in and they don't really care. Sometimes, she sweats the small stuff which can really slow her down, but once she fixes the problem, she's back in motion.

All in all, Marco loves his children.
