I would expand on his flaws, really dive into all his short-comings.

So is this Wicca, or just magic like in a fantasy novel?

Nice job having a background. I would use that expierence and tie it into his flaws a little more. You are definitely on the right track, so I say just keep going.

All in all, I like the ideas, I like the character. Way to go.
