Okay so how about a war torn country in the near future (so within the next 100 years) A likely one would be China to Australia, their government is buying up Australian land and was even caught attempting to indoctrinate school children into the chinese way of life (in the governments eyes) You could have it so China had some edge and nearly destroyed Australia. So you could write about Aussie Guerilla tactics (Australians also helped develop guerilla tactics in a war against South Africa once)
So who knows the war tears the country apart and now people are just trying to survive.
If this isn't the kind of apocalypse you were thinking I'll think up something else
