The moon was high in the sky, and the frogs were croaking loudly. It wasn't freezing but it was chilly, a breeze was shaking the trees. A few clouds were floating through the air, casting black shadows on the clearings. A typical night in the forest. A young girl wearing a deep dark red hoodie and cargo pants was walking allow a small over grown trail. Her face was covered by her hood and she kept looking behind her. A small movement in her hood told her that her cat Plag was awake. The girl, Cat, glanced over her shoulder again, there was no one there. Maybe she'd lost them, for the moment.
A young man, looking about 23, stood at the edge of a moonlit lake. The noises were peaceful and enjoyable. The waterfall rushed down, the night birds chirped, the leaves rustled in the wind. All was nice. He crossed his arms, his deep blue eyes, searching for something to do. He watched a fox run past a couple trees, as the wind blew more harshly. His black hair waved in the wind. He sighed, there was nothing to do.
Cat continued along her path, reaching a lake side. She glanced back again, two people had appeared. Panic rose in her chest. Turning on her heel she began to run, Plag hopping from her hood and running beside her. Half way around the lake she froze, seeing the man standing there.
Cress' eyes flicked over to the girl who had appeared with a cat at her side. There seemed to be two other people following her. He sighed, "Hello…" He said, his voice sounding emotionless.
Looking over her shoulder at the two advancing people, she ran forward and hid behind the man. Plag turning around to face the two people, his fur fluffed out making him twice his original size. "Please don't let them take me," Cat whimpered quietly.
Cress was surprised and glanced at her, "Who are they?" He asked watching the people cautiously.
"I don't know," Cat answered. "All I know is they've kidnapped me before and they've been chasing me for several days now." As the people approached, Plag hissed and backed up. His gray and white fur going down as he retreated. Even he didn't want to go back.
"Excuse us kind sir, but would please hand over the girl?" the woman asked, walking forward.
Cress stepped forward to meet her, a few inches taller than her. His blue eyes searched her, "Well, what do you need her for?" He asked, raising an eyebrow.
"That is not of your concern, please get out of the way," the other person, a man, stepped up next to the woman. Cat took a few steps back in case she had to run. This man was helping her, to most he probably would have just seemed like a nice person. But to Cat he was like a hero.
Cress frowned, his eyes narrowed, "I'm good thanks." He said sternly, "Now I'd run off if i were you…"
"And just who's going to make us?" the woman asked looking around. "I don't see anyone, do you see anyone Ronan?" he gave a light snort.
"Not anyone smart," he scoffed eyeing the man in front of him. Plag let out a hiss and lashed at Ronan's leg. Cat was holding her tiny pocket knife, as she stepped up to back the man helping her up.
Leave us alone," she said, her body rigid with fear.
Cress he'd his arm out to keep the girl and cat back. He chuckled darkly and shook his head, "How cute. Trying to be scary, are you?" He looked up his eyes glittering, "I'll show you fear…" His hands glowed a deep purple and instantly he had twin scythes, both of them glowing purple and sharpened well. "Lookie here, one for both of you!"
Fear flickered in both of their eyes as they watched the scythes appear. Plag leaped back and then climbed up Cat's leg into her hood again. Cat herself was backing up as well, not out of fear but because she didn't want to get in this man's way. A grin spread across her face, she didn't know why but this felt right.
Ronan and the woman were both backing up, Ronan had something in his hands now. It was a gun, but he was shaking so hard that he could barely hold it.
Cress smirked at the gun, "Now, now…don't shoot unless you want the scythes through your skulls…". He easily twisted his scythe and knocked the gun away.
Without a word Ronan turned and ran, the woman, realizing that she was alone now, let out a scream and ran away. Soon both were out of sight. And the forest was quiet again.
Cress let the scythes vanish and turned back to the girl, "That was easy." He said with a bright smile on his face.
"That was incredible!" Cat exclaimed. "I've never seen anything like before in my life, I think, maybe, I don't know. I don't exactly remember most of my past, but that was still amazing."
"Thank you. My name's Cress by the way. Cress Hazelle. Nice to meet you and your car." Cress looked proud of himself.
"I'm Cat, this is Plag," Cat said jerking a thumb back at the cat in her hood. "nice to meet you to."
"Are you going to make something else appear out of thin air?" Plag asked from her hood.
Cress laughed, "Not right now, no.". He looked at the two, "so you have no idea why they were chasing you?"
"No clue at all," Cat sighed. "Most of my memories are gone so it might have something to do with my past, but I'm not sure." A frown replaced her smile for a moment while she thought, then she just about jumped to the moon. "You can hear Plag talk to?" she was almost jumping with excitement.
Cress frowned, “You lost your memories?” He crossed his arms, confused, “And yes I can hear your cat talk.”
"I thought I was the only one who could hear him cause I'm crazy," Cat explained still awed by the knowledge that she wasn't the only one who could hear the talking cat.
"She thinks she's crazy, and wouldn't listen to me when I said she wasn't," Plag sounded completely unimpressed.
Cress chuckled and smiled at the two, “That’s interesting. Anyway why are you in the forest?”
"Well, it was a pretty night and we decided to take a walk," Cat kicked a stone next to her.
"AKA, we'd been found and the best place to lose anyone is in a forest so we came here to try and lose them," Plag rolled his eyes. He jumped out of Cat's hood again, and walked over to a rock by the water. "She just doesn't want to say that," he called over his shoulder.
"I'm capable of taking care of myself," Cat snapped, then looked at the ground and lowered her voice. "Most of the time."
